Brooding for Dummies, Friday, Period 2

//The moose made me come back,// Jono said by way of explanation as he stepped back into the classroom. //Frankly, I'm surprised any of you did, but at this point I'm about as curious to see what the hell happens with the rest of this workshop as anybody.//

At least he was honest about it.

//Last week I had a request for music, so that's going to be what we do this week while I contemplate how to take this syllabus I was handed and make it even remotely useful in real world applications. This week I'm going to just start with... brooding isn't always just standing around looking menacing. Likewise, nobody in this class needs to feel obligated to do it, not for an easy grade, not for anybody's sake but their own. What it really is, at its core, unless you're just embracing the aesthetic of it, is unhappiness. It's deep thought while a person attempts to navigate their way out of some manner of negative emotional state. Anger, fear, sadness, or all of the above all twisting in on one another creating a feedback loop.//

He shrugged a little.

//It's an attempt at coping. And I used to get more than my fair share of shite for it back in the day, but I had more than my fair share on my plate, too. Just know that there's nothing wrong with needing to sit with your thoughts for a while, just so long as you can find your way out the other side again.//

And maybe that was what he should have led in to last week's class with, but he'd still been gobsmacked that he actually had to teach this in the first place.

//And now... music. It isn't necessary for brooding, but something to set the mood isn't always a bad thing. I tend to go for something angry, something that could do all the seething for me, because I can't. You're going to find a lot of this class is going to be about seeing a need filled so that you can pick your way through your own head more easily, and then filling it. This week you've each got a computer station and a few different internet sites to go through. Pick through the selection, find something that fills a need you think you might have. Do you want music to soothe you while you hurt? Music that will feed your anger so that you can spend it in your own head rather than taking it out on the people around you? Something happy and completely antithetical to your mood in order to shock yourselves out of it? It's music. There's no wrong answer, here. Just find what you think you need, and, if you're feeling up to it, share with the class.//

There. That was... vaguely educational and Jono felt weirdly satisfied about that.

Huh.

It was funny. That description of brooding hit Astrid far too close for comfort, a reaction that left her sitting there.

Brooding.

Yeah, Ingrid has pretty much called that one, huh?

Tip went straight for Janelle Monae first, for a nice black girl magic ego boost. Then a peaceful bit of Laura Mvula. Then, because you couldn't be confident or peaceful all the time, she added Mirel Wagner for something nice and spooky. Which transitioned neatly into Tank and the Bangas to bring the tempo back up and get her moving again.

She was pretty proud of that little mix, yes. Maybe it was classically brooding, except for the Wagner bit, but she felt they were all quite thought provoking.

Well. With the technology she'd seen in this place so far, Astrid was honestly a little surprised it wasn't until now that she'd have to use a computer. She settled into her station, biting her lip a little and trying not to feel a little intimidated. Sure, she'd had a computer class in middle school, but she honestly didn't remember much about it. Her mom had used one for work, but other than that...they didn't even have a TV, much less a computer, and none of the computers she'd ever seen had been much like these sleek ones, anyway.

So she sort of poked around a little as she wondered if she should ask for help or just try to figure out how to use the sites and play the music herself.

Of course she wasn't going to ask. But she did figure it out, finding the search bar, typing something in, and then being surprised that some results actually popped up.

So after a little while, with a satisfied smirk on her face, Astrid was leaning back and listening to some Indonesian gamelan music. Not exactly the expected kind of brooding music, but....she had her reasons.

Breq was mentally going through her song collection. There were a considerable amount of them that would qualify here, and she found it was very hard to choose. Without noticing, she began to hum quietly.
