Detention, Saturday, 3/25, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Dream appears bored and a little contemptuous of the four teenagers who file into the Danger Room for detention. Half the room is set up as a conventional classroom; the other half holds four military-style cots. A table in the classroom half holds some food for later.

Dream inclines his head in a nod of greeting. "Hello. You are in my care for the duration of the day. I promise I will not harm you, permanently."

It might be that he gives slightly more significant glances to Marty and Angel, who both served detention under him several months before. He might also give Angel a look that could say, I have not forgotten what we talked about.

Or it might all just be a trick of the light, and he may give no student any particular attention.

Spanish is a Romance language. It developed from Vulgar Latin. Which sounds rather apt for a vulgar language like Spanish, but it just means that it derived from a spoken, rather than literary, version of Latin.

Spanish is now the fourth most widely spoken language in the world. I recommend that all people learn at least a bit of Spanish. It's very helpful in communicating with the maids and the gardeners.

Dream silently places a boxed lunch containing a ham sandwich, a bag of pretzels, an apple and a bottle of apple juice on each desk.

He sat where he was, a sullen broody expression on his face.

As the students finish their lunches, Dream's smile glints.

"I believe it is time for a nap," he announces, pointing each detainee to a cot. Even if they are inclined to protest they aren't tired, they feel compelled to lie down, to sleep, and then, to dream. Their dreams may be about school, or may be memories from further in the past. They may even be visions of thr future.

The students sleep and dream on, and their dreams become darker, harder, threatening -- nightmares, in a word.

For Logan and Angel, this nightmare may literally be thei worst they can imagine.

With a wave of his hand, Dream awakens the students.

"You have served out your time. You may leave," he says.

They might wonder why they feel so anxious, so utterly unrefreshed, after such a long nap.

Logan jerked awake suddenly. For a moment he didn't remember anything and wondered why his heart pounding against his chest felt so odd. Then the full force of the dream washed over him. He sat up and looked around frantically, half-expecting to find himself in the East Attic.
