Japanese Blades, First Period, Friday [07/06].
The Danger Shop had been set up as your typical dojo setting - sliding doors, tatami mats and all. So yes, no chairs, y'all. Enjoy sitting on the floor, if you chose to sit. Mitsutada stood at the head of the room, dressed up in his armor... well, to the extent of what bits of his battle outfit were armor. He looked more like a butler who had cobbled on pieces of samurai armor than anything that you'd typically consider actually a protective suit. Next to him stood a smaller figure, under four feet tall, wearing a blue short kimono with the hem tied up and the sleeves pulled back. This other figure had a huge poof of blue hair that matched his clothes, and he had big eyes.
"Welcome everyone," Mitsutada said, pulling a wooden bokken out and taking a few swings with it. "You've signed up for this class because you have an interest in Japan, swords, or possibly just combat. But because of the particular unique nature of myself and my little comrade here, you are going to get a chance to learn not just about the different types of weapons of Japan but from the different types of weapons of Japan."
He posed for effect. "I am Mitsutada Shokudaikiri, a tachi forged by the great smith Mitsutada Osafune. I could go into my own story, but today we are going to talk about some of the smallest of weapons, Tantou."
He put the longer bokken away and then he and his smaller compatriot pulled out short bokken - not much longer than a large kitchen knife.
"I am Sayo Samonji," the boy introduced. "I was named after the poem by Saigyou Houshi. But the matters of my origin are not such a pretty sight... I am covered in blood and hatred, a revenge tragedy. I was forged in 1334 by Saemonzaburo, a sword of a ronin from Nissaka. After his wife died, the ronin went to sell me to help provide for his son, but he was killed by bandits on his way. When he later learned what happened, the son vowed revenge, and became a sword polisher. He waited and learned for years, and then the fateful day came when a man came in to have his tantou polished. When the son removed the handle to see the tang, he saw the inscription which told him that it was the sword of his father."
"When the customer returned, the son used his father's blade, me, to kill him," Sayo continued. "He satisfied his need for revenge, though that desire is still within me, but I make sure to only use it against those we must fight on the battlefield."
Mitsutada was doing his best to look supportive while also looking like he was not entirely prepared for starting this class with such a dark backstory. "I suppose now would be a good time to open things up to questions, and also introductions from each of you."

Introductions/Questions!
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Just when she thought this place couldn't get weirder, it just had to go and one-up itself.
She was fairly certain her mother had just picked this course because of the cultural aspects, but she highly doubted Ingrid realized there'd be actual sparring and fighting. Or maybe she had realized it, which made about as much sense as everything else around her right now.
"Uhhh...." Right, at least introductions she could grasp. "I'm Astrid. I..."
Am so out of my element.
"...okay."
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Even Astrid's stone-cold expression faltered a little at that one.
"Yeah," she said. "Sure. Thank you. I will."
She had absolutely no intention of asking anything.
Even if she was a little curious to see what kind of crazy story he would come up with for her mother's knife and what kind of child he'd get to play it.
Probably someone like Astrid herself, but smaller and more...angry.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Because that was some Auradon level bullshit that she was not here about. Not the singing and dancing bit per se--she was from a musical canon as well--but singing and dancing inanimate objects were just too much.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Look, she was a villain. And villains didn't traditionally fare too well against talking sidekicks.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
These people were weapons! Inorganic objects made animate!
"I'm Peridot!" She was jumping up to introduce herself, pleased that she was actually even about the same height as one of the swords in the room. "I'm a Gem!"
She was pointing at the gem on her forehead, yes. This was exceptionally exciting, considering most humans tended to make weird comments about jewelry whenever they met her.
"Are your bodies hard-light projections too? How are you connected to your swords? Is Japan in a galaxy anywhere near here?"
Re: Introductions/Questions!
"But we are still the weapon as well," Sayo added.
"Yes, if the blade were to get damaged, we would also suffer," Mitsutada said. "We tend to keep our blades near us, and take good care of them for that exact reason."
Re: Introductions/Questions!
... Peridot was throwing her arms up in the air in excitement. And then doing a little cackle and a pleased jog in place.
"Yes! Gems too!" She clapped her hands. "Humans don't get it at all have you noticed?"
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Mitsutada also chuckled a bit. "You're right, most seem to think that I transform from a sword, which would be very strange."
Re: Introductions/Questions!
She pointed at her forehead.
"It's not complicated. If my gem shatters, that's it for me, because it is me."
Well. That wasn't it. But it would make for a very long eternity spent as the bits and pieces of a trapped, fragmented mind.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Re: Introductions/Questions!
"Re-forged," she said, maybe even the faintest bit awestruck. "We don't have anything like that."
Well. They had Steven spit. But it hadn't been used on anything more serious than a crack before.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
Re: Introductions/Questions!
"That sounds... so... GREAT. I'll take notes. Should I take notes? I never take notes."
She took logs. And not even really those, anymore.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
'Great' wasn't how any of the Touken Danshi would describe some of those experiences.
Re: Introductions/Questions!
"Okay, then I will," she enthused, grinning brightly. "Yesssss."
She was going to take notes.
Time for Practice
Wooden tantou-size bokken appeared, one for each student.
"Time for us to spar! No striking the face, go about this with a mind to the safety of your peers. I will not tolerate recklessness in this classroom."
Re: Time for Practice
Re: Time for Practice
She'd have to improve her footwork, though, if she wanted to get close enough to use this. Unless it was meant to be a surprise stab.
Re: Time for Practice
She might have cackled a little, waving it around experimentally. She'd seen swords used before, mostly on television, but had never really pictured herself holding one. After all, that wasn't what she was for.
After the Class
Of course, Mitsutada was around if you had more private questions for him, too.
Re: After the Class
Re: After the Class
Mitsutada placed a reassuring hand on Sayo's back. "There would have been no way to identify my blade unless you saw where the signature is, which is along the tang. Hard to see unless you've taken the blade apart for polishing."
