Sure, the heat hadn't been bothering Amaya too much...she was, after all, a woman who thrived when most of her day was spent in front of a hot, fiery furnace. But she knew it had been bothering plenty of people, and the heat added to the humidity added to the threat of rainstorms at about the time the class was being held finally pushed her to reluctantly have a class held inside in the school's workshop. There might have been a little bit of grumbling about how it might not be an issue if it weren't for the time change, but even that she figured was probably better for the kids...and the neighbors around the site.

So messages were sent and the students were to meet at the school instead of the site, and at least it was just their first day, so taking it easy might not be too bad.

"Hello," she said, when the students arrived, "and welcome back to some of you, welcome to construction to the others. Glad to see some familiar faces! I was hoping to jump right into it, but let's consider this our first safety lesson: if the weather's unsafe, you'd best take it easy, and we're especially not doing roofing or electrical wiring in the threat of a storm. Hopefully next week's a little more promising, but for now, we'll stick with something simple to get our feet wet. We'll do some introductions, I've got an instructional safety video because safety is something I cannot stress enough, and then I've got a little project for us, too."

With that, her fist pounded into her other hand and she nodded. "So let's get started."

There's not much of one, no, but enough for you to feel either grateful or disappointed to be inside and off-site for the day.

Count Norman among the grateful! Not that he didn't enjoy actually putting things together in this class, but admittedly, constructing things in the rain was not on his list of favorite things to do.

"My name," Amaya led the introduction charge, hand to her chest, "is Amaya Blackstone, and most of you will recognize me from previous classes such as Creative Weaponry and Construction 101." She thought she was being funny. "I'm really glad to see some interest in learning a useful trade like construction, unless you're all here against your will, in which case, I hope you still have fun and surprise yourself with how much you like it. It's not easy, but I find it's incredibly rewarding.

"So, you're turn. Let's hear your names, why you're in this class, and if there's anything in particular you'd like to learn about in the course of the next few weeks."

"I'm Norman Babcock, and I'm in this class because I actually learned a lot last term, and wanted to see what the rest of the process looked like too." He paused, and then added, "And because it really can't hurt to have some practical life skills. Not many people can make a living on reading comic books."

Or talking to the dead.

"Good to have you back, Norman," Amaya said, with a nod and a faint smile. "Glad to know all the heavy lifting didn't scare you off. Everything this session'll likely be smooth sailing."

Well, maybe not compared to comic books.

"It sounds like it's going to be a lot of finer work," Norman observed, smiling a little. "I'm looking forward to that."

"I'm Breq, and I signed up for this class because getting some experience with local building technology would be helpful. I've done a lot of maintenance and repairs on space ships," on herself, "but that's not quite the same thing."

"Welcome aboard, then, Breq," Amaya nodded. "Construction on a building's probably a lot different than on a space ship, I'd wager, but I don't know much about ships, so who knows? I would like to learn more about them, though, so maybe you could teach me a few things if I ever get around to it."

"I'd be happy to," Breq said. "But I think it might be useful for me to know more about the construction of buildings here."

"Now, safety is incredibly important when you're dealing with construction," Amaya reiterated when everyone was done with the introductions. "Be safe, or you'll be sorry. Today, since we're in the classroom, it's not an issue, but if we were on site, no one goes anywhere without their helmets, their gloves, and their goggles. If you're not feeling well, say something and step out, because that's when accidents happen." Her eyes may have danced to Beaker. A lot. During the whole duration of the video, in fact. "When most accidents happen. Sometimes, they also just happen, despite your best efforts....

"So I dredged up a little video for you to watch, covering some of the things that can go wrong on a construction site. It's not long, so we'll definitely have time for questions if you have any at the end."

Just give her a moment to set it up. She was still getting used to this technology, okay?

"Please keep the video in mind as we move forward with the actual construction next week, weather permitting," Amaya said. "I'm not going to let you guys leave here empty handed, though. Today, we're going to be constructing something still...little somethings, birdhouses, to be exact, with a little catch: lighting! One of our days will be wiring up the building for electricity, so I figured this was a fun little way to get a bit more familiar with wiring. We'll walk through it together, but I've included instructions in your materials kits to use to follow along with. Don't hesitate to ask questions as you work, either, and if we've got time at the end, there's some paint and things if you want to spruce 'em up.

"Come on up, grab a kit, and let's get to work!"

She's there if anyone needs her, before, after, and during class.
