Flight and Flying

"So it turns out that I'm teaching a class on flying," Anakin said, rubbing his hands together and grinning, "which is basically the best thing ever, so I was going through the setting and it has podracing! I did that when I was, like, nine, so it's super easy."

It was not super easy.

"I won't even make you create your own engines," Anakin continued. "A podracer is a tiny, one-being gravity-affected landcraft that gets dragged behind a couple of giant engines," he said pulling up a holo image.. Totally doesn't look like a death trap at all, huh, kids? "It's a big racing sport in the Outer Rim, with lots of bets placed on the winner. Like auto races or horses races, but with more explosions. So I put a bunch of different podracers into the system for you to choose from, then we'll have a race and most of you will probably blow up," he said. "But that's fine. It's not real."

With those reassuring words of wisdom, Anakin waved his hand at the various simulators for the students to pick from.

Seriously. First Kanan/Caleb, now Anakin. What was with the braids.

"It's because they're Padawans," Theron told her in an undertone, absently rubbing the spot his own stupid braid would have gone if the universe hadn't decided he should be the butt of a cosmic joke.

And between the tiny earnest one, and the tall sullen one, he was feeling personally victimised by the island throwing baby Jedi at him today.

"Is mocking part of basic Jedi training?" Sabine hissed back.

"I'm told it's less important than the handstands and meditation." And meditating while doing handstands.

"How do you know so much about Jedi training?"

Where "so much" meant "anything" since it was kind of a moot point by Sabine's time.

Because he'd flunked out of Jedi school, but that was a particularly sore spot today.

"Knew a crazy old Jedi who taught half the council."

Knew, raised by. Same diff.

"You know, weeks ago that would have surprised me?"

Was it a good or a bad thing to acclimate this fast?

Theron grinned. "If we're talking surprises, Mandalorians who ask questions first and shoot later rank up there too."

Sabine shrugged. "Maybe you caught me on a good day."

Or she was a reasonable person most of the time, whatever.

Sabine figures this couldn't be much different than a speeder, until she saw that they were falling apart. And then she sighed, resigned herself to blowing up, and got in to practice.

She was not going to be a fan of this one.

The podracer looked like someone had decided that swoops were far too safe and trustworthy vehicles. This was going to end well.

Something extremely dangerous/complicated with more parts than you probably actually needed and looked like it had been put together by someone drunk?

Eh, no worse than trying out any weapons Uncle Qrow made for her or Ruby when they were tiny. And Yang was pretty explosive-resistant.

"This thing needs to be repaired," Breq announced. "I know this is only a simulation, but what's the point if I know I'm going to explode."

She was actually a little uncomfortable with exploding.

"I've never used a hydrospanner, but I'd try," Breq said. "Better than flying something that's just going to fall apart if there's no reason for it."

Re: AND RACE

[personal profile] midichlorianfail 2018-06-07 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Theron ended in the middle of the pack, but he hadn't crashed, and considering all the people ahead of him were Jedi, aliens, or able to set things on fire wither their brains, he thought that was a respectable enough showing.

Anyone who had seen Yang on the speeders was going to be completely unsurprised with the sheer recklessness and dedication to speed she displayed while pod racing, as well as her utter disregard for the concept of 'gravity.' Flying (and fighting) happened in three dimensions, not one, and trying to treat a podracer like a car was both stupid and boring

Mind you, her racer was smoking in a not-good way as she tore across the finish line, and she had to spin it out a few times in tight circles to disperse her momentum before screeching to a halt, but her time was really good and people had shot at her, so Yang was happy.
