Climbing & Caving, Monday Period 3

Liam had handwavily informed the students to meet at the causeway today, and to dress in gear appropriate for hiking.

There was a portal waiting for them, and once everyone had stepped through to the other side, they'd find themselves at the base of a granite mountain.

"Welcome to Squamish, British Columbia," Liam said. "This mountain here is the Stawamus Chief, or just The Chief. We're not climbing the mountain today, although depending on how this goes, we may come back to do that. Instead, we're going to continue on from last week and tackle some of the boulders here at the base of the mountain."

"In bouldering, climbs are rated on a scaled starting from V0 and currently going all the way to V17. Here in Squamish, there's a little bit of everything, from V0s and 1s all the way up to 14."

He gestured to the pile of chalk bags and crash mats that he'd assembled and brought through ahead of time. "Grab some chalk, and lay some mats out if you think you'll need them, and get to climbing."

Peridot would get to climbing in a minute. Really. She just needed to look up at the mountain, making an "o" shape with her mouth while admiring it.

That was a quality chunk of granite.

Visiting anywhere new and different was always exciting for Sidon, so he was trying very hard to not get distracted by the beautiful vistas as Liam was informing them of their task for the day.

There are plenty of boulders scattered about the base of the mountain, all of varying degrees of difficulty. Pick a problem, throw some crash mats down if you need them, and go at it!

Boulders, yeah! Peridot was totally gung-ho about the climbing assignment for today. Especially since successfully getting to the top of the boulder she'd selected meant she'd have an even better view of the mountain. Why wasn't all of Earth like this? She liked this.

Oh, that blasted chalk, though! Still, just like the sand in his beach class, it was a necessary evil, he supposed, one easily forgotten as soon as he started in on the climbing, which certainly brought him back home, because, while the look of this place was rather different, the layout and the sharp boulders reminded him a lot of Lanayru in a wonderful way.
