Baby's First Fieldwork [Tuesday, Period 3]

Aphra's class was meeting in an ordinary classroom this week, possibly because Aphra had been distracted with the fish and forgotten to organise something.

She reached into her satchel and placed the fish in pride of place on the desk.

Okay, maybe not so much possibly as definitely.

"You've had a taste of proper digs and describing what you find, so you've probably noticed that it's often not very interesting. But sometimes you get hold of something really great, something that helps you unlock the mysteries of a whole ancient civilisation, or even better introduces entirely new ones, because that last can result in a career's worth of funding." No small thing in academia.

Aphra patted the fish, which obligingly spat out streamers and started blasting music again. "So pretend you just found this guy, what kind of questions might it answer, or bring up?"

As she tries to sell you on the wonder of the fish.

It took self-control for Peridot to not jump up and protest that the fish was her fish, and hey, give it back, she'd stolen it fair and square!

... But then it spat out streamers, and she found herself entirely distracted by that, instead.

"Oooohhh."

On one hand, that was already horrifying.

On the other hand, Sabine already had Ideas.

What might it say about the universe? What questions might it stir? Is that a looping holo of your classmate being attacked by a roomba that it's playing?

"The fish taught me that all good things in life are fleeting," Peridot said sagely. "That one day, you might have something beautiful, and the next, people are putting dresses on gremlins and it all slips through your fingers..."

These were the hard lessons, truly.
