Attitude: Deal With It, Friday, Period 2

When students came into the classroom today, they'd see Reno, perched up on the desk like maybe he'd forgotten how chairs worked, just kind of looking around the room and taking it all in.

"Shit, it's been too friggin' long, yo," he muttered, a grin on his face before he looked up at the students again. "Oh, hey. Rookies."

And one tiny version of his boss, which really only added to the amusement.

"I don't know if you guys are all lost, actually thought it'd be a good idea to be here, or someone signed you up for this class, and I don't care. You're all stuck with me until the end of this summer term now, ain't you all thrilled?" He did not pause for their replies, no. "In the next few weeks I'm gonna teach you some important crap about attitude, lookin' cool in the face of crazy, sellin' that you maybe actually got your shit together, and havin' a good time while doin' it. But first, we're gonna get some things offa our chests, here."

He lifted his chin at his class and smirked.

"Last day you're gonna be asked to do this until next term, so suck it up an' give me some introductions. Name, what you're doin' in this class, and an insult someone's thrown at you. Then throw an insult back at me, preferably along with," and he cheerfully flipped his students the finger, "a rude gesture, yo. Get it outta your systems now. You'll be wantin' to do it for the next few weeks anyway."

He assumed. Sometimes students actually liked him.

Those students were confusing.

With attitude!

It's week one, it's pretty simple.

But let's be real; the rest of these classes are probably going to be pretty simple, too.

Name, why you're in this class, some insult someone's given you over the years.

Then insult Reno. Go on. Get it out of your system. Give him the finger while you're at it. Prove you're better than the last group of kids he gave this class to. He had to coax that gesture out of all of them but one, bunch'a losers.

He's still sitting on the desk.

He likes it up there. Nice view. The weather's great.

Yaaaay I am no longer sick todaaaay.

Astrid Magnussen

Not that Astrid needed a class like this to inform her of this fact, but this was just reminding her that her mother had a sick sense of humor sometimes.

"I'm Astrid," she offered, then hesitated, because she didn't want to feel like murdering two of her instructor with poison one day just for being honest, but she didn't think this guy would have a conniption fit about it like Old Man Jenkins. "I'm here because it's on my schedule."

And she hesitated again, because there were so, so many things to choose from for that last part of the introduction. Most of which she honestly didn't feel comfortable repeating in a classroom setting. So she stuck with the one she got the most, straight from her mother's mouth, which seemed to hurt more than any of the curse words and derogatory names from classmates.

"People," her mother, "always say I'm too weak. And I've got no imagination."

Which she kind of proved with her return insult, but, to be fair, she didn't know this guy yet. It was kind of hard to verbally eviscerate someone you've known for two seconds. "And I think your hair is way too obviously trying to make a statement."

But at least she was a little creative in her rude gesture, brushing a hand under her chin in a forward flicking motion with a bit of a mean-mug expression on her face. She remembered her mother using that one to particularly good results a lot when they lived in Paris.

Yeah, for what it was worth, Reno was going to take all of that in stride. He grinned a little and shrugged over the schedule thing, because, hell, this was Fandom. He knew how this worked by now.

"Weak is subjective anyway," he noted. "We can work on that and the imagination, if you're lookin' to show 'em they're full of it, yo. And yeah, I heard the hair thing plenty. You should see what some of the other people from my neck of the woods do with theirs."

... Okay, no, Reno's hair was still a bit more extreme then most. He liked it that way, whatever.

"Gotta say, I approve of the gesture," he added. "I didn't even have to remind you to do it. You got potential."

No, really. All but one of his last class needed coaxing. It had been tragic.

Paris Geller

"I'm Paris Geller," Paris said. "I'm here because I'm going to Harvard next year and in order to do so, I need to have the correct attitude at all of my interviews. This also seemed like one of the least useless classes being offered this summer."

"As for insults, people seem to think I'm a humorless, single-minded bitch," she said with a shrug, "but I just refuse to be rolled over. If you prefer your girls to act like tiny birds dress them in the morning, then I'm not going to be your cup of tea, but I'm not going to apologize for it."

She gave Reno a withering look. "Though I'm not sure someone with hair clearly not found in nature and a dubious grasp on how chairs work is going to be able to teach me anything that will get me into the most prestigious school on the planet."

Was he going to have to coach this girl into how to properly wield a finger? Was he? Really?

"Astrid already touched on the hair," he pointed out, "and the color is natural. But you get points for at least touchin' on the chair thing so I'm not gonna dock you points for copying, yo."

You're welcome, Paris.

"Your fingers broken, Harvard?"

"And my mother's still a natural blonde," she snorted, flipping the corna like Nanny had showed her when she was in traffic and someone had cut her off.

Telling someone that their wife screwed around was totally a normal reaction to traffic stupidity, right?

Ooo, Reno liked that one, too. He gave her a little grin and a nod of approval.

"See, there. You're goin' places, Harvard."

When you got a compliment like that from Reno, odds were that those places probably weren't referring to Harvard, though.

Rufus Shinra

Rufus leaned back in his chair, letting a few of the others go before it got to his turn. That gave him the time to study the Turk intently, though his expression never changed from vague boredom.

Huh.

At the very least, this Turk wasn't here to babysit him. The rest... well, Rufus would look into.

"Rufus," he said carelessly, when it was his turn. It wasn't like the Turk didn't know who he was. "If there's something I haven't been called, I don't remember it."

See how little he cared.

"I do enjoy the rumour that I don't even bleed," he added thoughtfully. "I'm sure you've heard worse about me, you mangy ShinRa mutt."

Rufus was not trying particularly hard to insult Reno here. Even the way he flipped him the bird was lazy.

Until Reno proved interesting enough as a teacher to be worth putting effort in expecting anything more from Rufus was a lost cause.

But hey, at least he didn't have to be prompted to do it. Reno just smirked back at him.

"Okay, but where's the insult, kid?"

Look, it was Rufus, but it wasn't his Rufus. And Reno always did have a reputation of being difficult anyway.

Oh, fine.

Rufus rolled his eyes.

"The SOLDIER here is more useful than you are."

"Yeah, but I get paid better."

But oof, there was a low blow. Low blow.

He'd literally asked for it.

"Make me wonder why," Rufus snarked back.

"If you ain't figured out why yet, it means we're doin' our job right," Reno pointed out.

And now he was having a battle of wits with a baby version of his boss.

This was so weird.

Cute.

"Please, even children know what the Turks do," Rufus scoffed. "I stand by my assertion that the SOLDIER is more useful to me."

At this point in time. For the work he was doing.

And several other caveats like that.

Well. That got an interested look, right there.

"Is he, now?"

Well. That painted an interesting picture, considering this kid clearly wasn't Zack's Rufus, either.

Ah, but Zack now belonged to Rufus.

Even if Zack didn't really know that yet.

"I imagine you'll see," Rufus said, unconcerned.

"I imagine I will," Reno agreed, tilting his head at Rufus, sizing him up.

He knew what he was capable of. Probably better than Rufus himself did, these days.

The idea that he'd have a SOLDIER at his disposal at this point in the game was terrifying in new and interesting ways.

Rufus always had despised being predictable.

He returned the Turk's look with interest.

It might take awhile, but Rufus was confident he'd find a way to use Reno too.

Well... good luck, kid.

Reno continued staring him down, and then shrugged it off and got back to the lesson.

"A teacher, huh?"

Yeah, that was Ino leaning in the door, looking distinctly unimpressed with Reno's presence on the island.

"Nice excuse."

And Reno was just going to grin back.

"You can't prove nothin'."

Well. That depended on what he was being accused of.

Yep. Still going to look unimpressed at him.

"What are you doing here?"

"Teachin'," Reno chirped. "Attitude."

Very important class, see?

"Why'd Tseng send you here?"

Look, there was no way he'd send Reno here to do that.

"What makes you think he did?" Reno tilted his head a little.

And then he just smiled. And shook his head.

"Says I'm a liability. I think he's just sick of me knowin' what the best course of action is when he's stuck."

"I don't buy it."

He had to know that.

"I know," Reno agreed. "So go on, guess."

"You're here to babysit," she said, narrowing her eyes at him.

"I'm here to brainstorm," Reno corrected.

"Gonna be hard to do that if I'm avoidin' you 'cause of the babysitting aspect," she noted. "And don't even say that ain't part of it."

Look, she knew both Tseng and Reno.

"Might be," Reno allowed. "But it'll be hard for me to give you a hard time about your wedding if you do that."

...

"I'm tryin' to decide if that's a plus or not," Ino said thoughtfully. "And who spilled the beans to you?"

"My new roommate," Reno said merrily. "Miguel."

And also, it had been on the radio a few times even since he'd come here. So.
