Anakin stood on the edge of the docks, a dozen rowboats bobbing the water around him. The clouds above were looking threatening (and kind of...not gray, which was odd), but so far the day had been dry. There was a set of bleachers (with canopies above them) set up for any spectators to cheer from, and the ambitious vendors from Mooby's were selling burgers and fries.

"Welcome to our first day of summer camp activities," Anakin yelled through the megaphone he'd acquired from...somewhere. "Our first community building activity will be a teachers versus students rowing race from here to the Isle of Ikea. The winning team receives a Big Mouth Billy Bass because I don't want it in my house any more, and all the Swedish meatballs they can eat. The losers get sore arms and the pleasure of not owning a singing fish award. In the event of a rowboat flipping, our PE instructor Steve Rogers will be out on a jet ski for rescue missions."

He looked at all the contestants. "I'll know if you're capsizing on purpose. Also, he's not that good looking. Contestants, please put on your life preservers while I call out the teams. For the students: Sabine and Beaker, Astrid and Jason, Rufus and Aloy, Theron and Tip, Norman and Khadgar, Peebee and Bobby, and Jaylah and Peridot. For the teachers: Amaya and Tony, Kanan and Magnus, Reno and Jenkins, Cara and Deadpool, and Liam and Zoe. Racers, man--or woman, or other--your ships."

Once everyone was in place, Anakin raised his hand. "On your marks, get set...go!"

...And that was when it started pouring rainbow colored-rain.

Get some food! Find a spot to sit! Binoculars have been provided to watch the race, if you can get them before the squirrels do.

Teammates, meet up here and form a strategy! If that strategy is "flip over and let Steve rescue you," Anakin is gonna judge you sooooo hard.

Or use magic, or design an engine using the stuff in your pockets...Anakin didn't tell you not to cheat, did he?

Since maybe you'll want to talk about the race results? The racers all get to take jetskis back to Fandom. Anakin's not mean enough (THIS TIME) to make you row back.

"This is your hint for next week, everyone!" Anakin said as people moved to avoid the rain. "Learn what macramé is!"

Okay, he had just been talking to Sabine about how there wasn't much to do in small towns, but this legitimately sounded like fun.

Until he looked around and saw the competition.

He was going to just buy himself a Coke and sip that while quietly fretting.

Yep. Norman was not at all freaking out about the competition at all even a little bit, honest.

"So," he said, a little uncertainly. "There's this story about a tortoise and a hare..."

Because really, he couldn't imagine managing anything but slow and steady. Trying to keep up with some of these people would probably kill him.

Peridot had no idea what any of this was, except that she got to take a break from the library in order to attend it, and she was all for new experiences! She looked around for Jaylah, quite pleased that she would get to participate in this aquatic human rite of passage.

Kanan was pretty sure he at least recognized Magnus in passing, and was pretty confident of their chances. Two strong guys and a rowboat, what could possibly go wrong?

"Full disclosure," Reno announced, his attitute pretty easygoing all things considered, "I grew up in a city in the middle of a huge desert and ain't never rowed a boat in my life, yo. But the idea is to go fast? I got that goin' for me."

This was going to be a disaster.

"How do I keep getting signed up for things?"

Sabine had questions.

Paris was an extremely competitive person, but physical activities weren't exactly her forte. So she found herself a spot on the bleachers, a pair of binoculars and pulled out a notebook to record the strengths and weaknesses of those she would see racing.

And...any other strengths and weaknesses she saw, too. It was always good to be prepared, right?

Kitty wasn't sure if this was something she should be doing, so she was sitting this one out. She was totally going to sit and watch, though, and probably cheer obnoxiously.

While it probably would have made for a pretty amusing image, Sidon was rather glad he wouldn't have to try to fit himself into one of those boats and attempt to row in what would wind up being a terrible disappointment for his partner as it would probably start sinking under his weight. He was not built for rowing, anyway, and would much rather race in the water, but, of course, that would give him a truly unfair advantage over the boats.

So, with swimming and rowing out of the question, he did the next best thing, which was also pretty great, in his book. Cheering everyone on! And while he certainly had his favorites, he would do his best not to let them show too much.

Astrid hadn't met this Jason person yet; it sounded like a normal name, though. That was good. It also sounded like a boy's name, which was also good, because as much as she'd love to be a fierce strong feminist Valkyrie in a situation like this, the fact of the matter was that she was an unfed teenager whose only time in a boat had been mostly lazily drifting and soaking in sights. So she looked almost apologetic as she tried to figure out who her rowing partner was.

Granted, she usually looked apologetic about most thing, but it was particularly potent at that moment.

Oh, hey, she was partnered up with that one guy who'd been super nice to her when she was a nerdy, awkward kid that one time and had managed to avoid ever since. Thankfully, there was a competition to focus on instead, and Amaya flexed her hands and stretched out her limbs a bit before tilting a smirk toward her partner.

"I think we could stand a pretty good chance," she said. "I never skip arm day!"

Plus the whole blacksmith arms thing. Those biceps weren't kidding around.

Jono wasn't even going to try to get to the binoculars before the squirrels did. He was here mostly for an excuse to get out of the house anyway, and since he didn't have any classes to teach in New York today, he figured he might as well be here. He found a place to sit in the bleachers, perfectly content to settle in and watch from a distance.

Rufus, like another Gaian who was going to be racing today, had grown up in a city, in a desert, and had never rowed before in his life.

He wasn't going to let that stop him from trying to win. Rufus was Googling how to row properly as he waited for Aloy to find him.

What? He wasn't going to go look for his partner. Don't be absurd.

Ino had soda, her own pair of binoculars, and a grin. She might not be allowed to participate since, well, not a teacher or anything like that, but she was going to watch and laugh.

Probably laugh a lot.

"Meep meep meep meep," Beaker said sympathetically. "Meep meep meep." He glanced out towards the water anxiously. "Meep meep meep meep meep?"

Not sure Sabine knew if there were any Beaker-eating monsters out there, Beaker.

"...I need that bass," Deadpool said, pondering which boat he needed to sabotage to succeed.

"I promise you that I won't punch you off the boat, into the water where a giant bass eats you and you become one with its flesh Akira style," Magnus said. Because it was important to get it out there.

Basically they were team blacksmith and should rightly win that terrible singing fish. But the universe conspired against them.

"Hell yeah," Tony replied, lifting his hand for a high five. "When we win, I think the real prize is destroying that fish."
