Aphra had told the students to meet her out by the back of the dorms, where they'd find a marked off grid that looked a little like a sandpit. If by a little you meant a lot. There was also a table with a toolkit laid out for each student.

"Hey, kids!" Aphra definitely seemed cheerful. "If we haven't had class together before, I'm Doctor Aphra and you're going to be learning how to be proper real world archeologists, on actual digs and everything, but since I'd like to keep what my reputation intact, first you're going to learn how to properly act on a proper dig. With delicacy and care." How they were going to learn that from Aphra of all people...

"This here is your dig site, which I've seeded with valuable cultural artifacts." It was mostly bottle caps and assorted knick-knacks, they'd need a couple of centuries to become valuable cultural artifacts. "Your job is to find something, then introduce yourself to the class and explain what you've found. Remember, if you don't know what something actually is, the words 'ritual object' are your friend."

She makes learning fun! Or traumatic! One of the two!

This wasn't quite what Peridots were for, no, but really, she'd take any excuse to poke around in the ground, these days. Call it the Kindergartener in her... She listened to the lecture, and looked speculatively at the sandbox.

She could do this. It would be easy.

Grab a toolkit, find a spot, and start delicately unearthing priceless treasures!

Or make some friends while digging up bottle caps.

Was Peridot right in there? Yes! Yes she was! Carefully brushing sand around while keeping an eagle eye on what she was digging up.

Hey, it wasn't glamorous work, but it was work all the same.

Hmm. Sabine wasn't sure what she thought about digging around, and she was sure they had to be something more than bottle caps, but it was better than being bored?

So far Paris had unearthed five bottle caps, three rubber bands, and a naked Troll doll, which had been angrily snatched away by a squirrel.

She was not thinking about that too much.

Aphra totally cares. Really.

"I," Peridot said, holding one of her treasures up proudly, "am Peridot, and what I've found today is an ancient appearance modifier, prized by civilizations long gone for its ability to enhance the slender, graceful appearance of a person's touch stump."

She paused.

"Finger. Observe!"

And then she demonstrated, sticking the pen cap she'd found onto the end of one of her wee little fingers and wiggling it around.

Fashion.

"That's the spirit, kid."

She hadn't realised there was a very good chance Peridot was being sincere.

"I'm thousands of years older than you," Peridot corrected cheerfully, and then looked down at her pen cap. "Can I keep this?"

She kind of liked it.

Sabine really wondered how many times she'd have to introduce herself here.

"Sabine," she said, holding up two bottle caps that had somehow been stuck together. "Ritual item."

She felt like that'd go over better than the reality.

"Good start," Aphra said approvingly. "What for?"

Archeology had a high bantha fodder component.

"I'm Paris Geller, and the prevelance of beverage tops leads me to the conclusion that this was a site for ritual festivals," Paris said, looking a little pained. "Dances, possibly even orgies, depending on how Roman we're going here."

"At your age is there really a difference?"

Aphra had had an interesting adolescence, okay?

"Theron," he said, holding his empty hands up. "I found an invisible ritual object."

Someone was still feeling a little punch drunk from Deadpool's class.

"Ha. Ha ha. Ha." Aphra was a little annoyed she hadn't thought to pull that on them first.

Who still had an academic reputation to lose, apparently.

...

Ha, now all I can think about is the mug collecting quest in Horizon Zero Dawn.
