All Things Beach- Monday- 1st period

The class had gotten an email this morning telling them to meet at the beach, and to wear beach-appropriate things, and also a warning that there was sand that you didn't want in your shoes ~~since it's coarse and gets everywhere~~.

"Morning!" Kitty greeted them. "My name's Kitty Pryde-Barton, you can call me pretty much any of those names, I don't really care. In this class, if you can even call it that, we're going to do beach things. We'll be meeting out here unless the weather's bad, in which case you'll have a message telling you to go to the Danger Shop, and you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable getting in the water, even if we're not getting in there every week. I know some of you, and not others, so why don't we start by going around and saying who you are and if there's anything you're hoping to get to in the next six weeks. Oh! And if there's something you can't do, like swimming, you should probably let me know but you can do that after class if you want. Okay, let's start here, and then we'll move on to today's activity."

Summer!

Who you are and what you want to get to in this class, if anything.

There were plenty of shovels and buckets and other ~~moddable~~ materials available, and there was definitely sand, so.

"Today you're making sandcastles. They're basically just structures made out of sand. You get it wet, you build it into something- it doesn't need to be a castle- and then see what you end up with. So that's today," Kitty said. "If you want to help each other, that's fine, too."

She had her own sandcastle she was making, too. Yes, she was going to have fun too.

Of course it's raining pretty good here.

Prince Sidon

Norman Babcock

Norman looked faintly amused as he went to introduce himself to the class. It wasn't every day he had to justify choosing to spend part of his school day on the beach, after all.

"I'm Norman Babcock," he said, "and I'm in this class mostly because it just sounded like fun. I can swim just fine, so you don't have to worry about that."

So help Norman, he almost laughed in delight when today's activity was announced. He wasted little time setting himself up with a bucket and a shovel, and spent a bit of class just filling his bucket with sand and turning it upside-down.

His sandcastle fell apart a few times, so he made a trip to the shoreline to grab some water in his pail before dumping it over the little place he'd claimed and starting again.

The level of excitement radiating off of Sidon was palpable, as his day was starting out with two of his favorite things: the beach and introductions.

"I am Sidon!" He announced eagerly, barely able to contain the thrill that was his great fist pump across his chest, this brilliant smile that caught so well in the sun to make his sharp grin sparkle. "The Zora Prince!"

Nope. Never getting old, that.

"I have spent my entire life around water," hello, understatement of the century, "so I believe my adviser decided to give me this class as a bit of a treat, since I cannot imagine he thought there would be a vast wealth of new things for me to discover. Still, I am quite excited, as I'm sure I will learn much about the culture that surrounds the beach on this particular world, and I am intrigued to discover how it might different from my own world."

And, though he didn't add this out loud, he was quite please to see that Kitty Pryde-Barton did not have a strict policy about swim trunks, unlike other places on the island, Onsen.

Sidon was discovering rather quickly that building something out of a material was quite a different challenge than chiseling and shaping it out of something, especially when that material was as malleable as sand.

Still, that didn't stop him from trying to make a castle that would look suspiciously like Zora's Domain...if he could get it to stay. He managed to get the main shape of the fish sculpture that held the throne room, but it rather fell apart whenever he tried to get the gravity-defying curl of the fish's tail.

Yang Xiao Long

"I'm Yang, and I'm here to get some quality time in the sun," she said bluntly. "I'm solar-powered."

No, Yang, you aren't. Behave.

"Good. The fewer times I have to play lifeguard, the better," Kitty said. "Are there any certain activities you'd like to do?"

"Beach culture like...." she checked.

"That woujd have really sucked this winter," Kitty said. "But we're definitely getting sun here, even if it sometimes has to be artificial."

"Honestly, I'm mostly just kind of happy to get some time outdoors," Norman admitted. "But maybe something low-key one of these weeks, like exploring tide pools or something?"

He liked low-key. It was just about his speed.

Bobby Drake

“Hey, Professor K,” sorry Kitty, you were stuck with that moniker. “I’m mostly here ‘cause it’s your class,” he admitted. “There’s not really anything I’m hoping to get to specifically, though. Just have fun, I guess.” A shrug. “And as for stuff I can’t do... hot weather’s not my favorite, but as long as there’s water around I’m good.” There was a beat before he added: “Oh yeah, and I’m Bobby Drake.”

"Well," said Sidon, "for example, back home, there are the lizalfos and the Lurelin villagers. The lizalfo make their homes all over Hyrule, no matter the climate, so it is no surprise that they would also find themselves acclimated to the beach, but the ocean where I am from is such a dangerous and mysterious thing that not even many Zora like to go too near it." He, of course, went there often and reveled in the excitement. "The Lurelin villagers, however, are an exception, with a lovely little village where they have made a culture out of fishing and sailing in those tumultuous waters."

"Ooh, I like it," Kitty said. "We can work that in."

"Okay... well, I don't know that we get that in depth over here, but I can see what we can explain," Kitty said.

Norman smiled at that, pleased that he hadn't been outright laughed at or something.

"Neat," he decided. "I'm looking forward to that this summer."

"Nice to meet you, Bobby," Kitty teased. "Water will definitely not be a problem here."

Also, aww, she liked someone taking a class for her.

"I am but here to learn and experience more of the wonderful things that Fandom High School has to offer me," said Sidon, placing a humble hand to his chest. "I have confidence that everything you wish to teach me will do nothing but enrich my understanding and improve my life in the most wonderful ways, Kitty Pryde-Barton! It will be magnificent!"

"Patch is an island; we got a little bit of winter? But it's primarily temperate forests and some beach," Yang replied cheerfully. "Your winter was the worst."

Khadgar

"I'm Khadgar and, er, I probably don't spend enough time outside, so I thought this might be a good way to fix that," he admitted.

Uma, daughter of Ursula

"I'm Uma," Uma said, managing to leave off the 'daughter of Ursula' bit with a slight effort of will. "I'm here because I like the ocean--" as one could probably tell from her hat, at least, which she was still wearing, "--and we don't have beaches at home. Just docks."

"Don't worry, we'll make sure you get a recommended dose of sunshine," Kitty promised. "At least once a week, anyway."

"So this'll be a change," Kitty said. "I like your hat."

Seriously, she really did.
