BWI Airport Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

Saturday morning, an elderly teal and white RV pulled into the dropoff lane outside the airport and disgorged a lanky teenaged boy and his bags onto the pavement, the driver asking him as he went if he had his laptop, migraine medication, and assorted other essentials. "Now get going and make some friends," she told him. "I've got a consult to get to in Virginia."

"I love you, Grandma," he said, and closed the door of the RV. As Xylda peeled out on her way to, he assumed, her next mark, Manfred headed into the airport, stopping off at Starbucks for a caffeine infusion before following airport employees' instructions until he found the right room. He was apparently the first one here, but he knew it was the right place because of the incredibly glittery banner.

High school, here he came.

Yup. Definitely not asking.

Drawing? Oh, absolutely. That duffel bag would be interesting trying to explain to her mother when she sent that one to her, but how could she not try to capture that in graphite?

Astrid didn't exactly feel comfortable with the fact that the school had apparently thought to send some budget clown in to entertain the students while they waited, but she was rarely one to complain.

Beaker sat down carefully in a chair, his feet swinging well above the ground, and gave her a cautious wave.

A very brief part of Astrid almost wanted to give a cautious wave of her pencil back, but that was pretty much giving the clown an invitation to approach her, just like giving change to bums on the street. You just kept your eyes down (save for the occasional glance up to get a good look for the drawing) and didn't engage.

She had to admit, though, she kind of had fun with drawing that hair.

Beaker, unaware of any clown-related thoughts Astrid might be having, pulled a uninflated balloon from his lab coat pocket and began to blow it up.

Okay, and now despite herself, Astrid was just a little curious what the clown planned to do with the balloon. Was he going to make something out of it? Was he going to keep blowing them up until he was surrounded, slowly filling the room? But she still didn't want to engage, so she just shook her head a little, creating more of a curtain to hide her face better as she peered over.

Given Beaker's luck, it was entirely likely that he'd get surrounded by balloons, end up floating on one despite the current lack of helium, and then explode.

Which was why he was very carefully blowing his balloon up, then put on twist in it and handed it over. Look, a snake!

Quelling the slight urge to reach out and take it out of politeness, Astrid just curled over her drawing a little more and pretended like she didn't see it, and wished there were more people here so the clown could go bother someone a little more receptive or naive.

Beaker made a sad little meeping noise and put it on the chair near her, then began another, well, snake.

He was not a very good balloon artist.
