Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2018, Early Saturday Evening [Part 1]

As soon as the sun was down, everything was ready for the graduation ceremony to begin. The lawn of the school had been lit up with blue and gold lights, which reflected nicely off of the glitter scattered throughout the lawn. Yes, glitter was going to get all over everything, sorry.

There were chairs set up for all of the graduates, and plenty of seats for guests to come and watch. The weather was beautiful, cooling off after the hot, sunny day, and everything seemed quiet, calm, and normal. You know, for now.

Congratulations, Class of 2018! You made it to the end!

"Excited," Kathy confirmed. "A little nervous, too. Fandom graduations always come with a surprise at the end."

She'd missed hers, but it had held true for all the other ones she'd seen.

"Proud, too, even if that's kinda weird to say." But Dante had never expected to see this day. Funny how that worked out between the two of them. "And just a tiny bit apprehensive, because after today, things start changing."

She glanced sideways at Kat, uncertain if Dante had told her about his plans to come home.

Kathy nodded. "Exactly. And that opens up the wide world of 'what next?'" she said, deciding to play it vague and general for the moment. "He's not the run off to college type, but few people stick around the island for long after they graduate."

It had been an automatic reflex! He liked it when she used Tsingani or D'Angeline when teasing/flirting/praising him! To be perfectly honest, Ada hadn't really realized she'd not used English until it had gotten the attention of Hyacinthe's other attendees.

"Yes ma'am," she said respectfully. "An' you're Hyacinthe's mama."

"I talked him into one yesterday," Kathy said, not mentioning it had been at, like, three in the morning after she'd gotten home from the police station. Ugh. "Going for kinda lowkey, I think. Not taking over a warehouse or whatever. Just our place, some friends, and probably all the pizza and terrible strawberry booze you could ever ask for."

"I do not have much Cruithne," Anasztaizia said, a little halting. "But I learn to say: you make his heart glad. Been his friend here."

She reached up, removing first one earring and then the other, and held them out to Ada. "Not pay. But thanks."

Ezra smirked. "Well, you know my feelings on terrible strawberry booze." No, she didn't, because he didn't have any. But he was trying to imply they were favorable. "Maybe I'll stop by."

He couldn't make himself make it a promise.

And she wouldn't ask him for one. If he didn't want to come, she wasn't going to try to force him into it. That would be a shitty thing to do to someone already trying his best.

"If you do show up, you can have my share of terrible strawberry booze," she said instead. And probably a kiss for saving her from it, but she wasn't sure if that was a thing she could say. "And if not, maybe I'll see you at brunch tomorrow and we can gossip over bellinis or something."

“It would be hard not to be his friend,” she said, switching to D’Angeline, though her speech was a bit slow and her accent carried over. “Everyone loves him.”

It was probably for the best not to talk about kissing. He'd been good about not straying too close to forbidden subjects so far, this time!

Of course, they'd only talked for about a minute.

"Possibly. I do love the free food people love to put on display here." Even though the 'free' part meant he couldn't steal it.

"It is like that at home, too," she said, trying to press the earrings into Ada's hand. She'd meant it; they were a gift for her, for all that the girl had done for her son. "But 'tis easy to love someone with a merry heart who is buying the drinks. You still care for him when his coin runs out and his smile fades."

Except she would have been serious about the kiss. And comfortable enough to do so again, even if kissing was as far as they got.

But again, not something she wanted to say, like she was holding it over his head for good behavior. It would happen when it happened.

"I'm pretty sure that's why they do it," Kathy said. "They know the easiest way to convince us all to come back is to offer free food to scavenge."

Which was why she was trying very hard to avoid even the appearance of pressure.

"Food is expensive and I know how much I eat," Kathy said. "If I didn't let the school supplement me every so often, I'd probably end up broke on the streets."

Ada knew better than to refuse the gift; that was beyond rude, but she did hold on to Anasztaizia's hands for a moment. "I ain't never got money," she said simply. "--lot of us around here ain't exactly respectable. Hyacinthe don't care, he thinks everyone matters." Even LUCILLE, though fuck if Ada knew why. "Ain't hard t' love someone like that."

"You are a good girl," Anastaizia said softly. "A kind girl, when you can be. And a hard girl, when you need to be." Her voice was approving, she was often a hard woman. "He is not hard and life will be unkind to him. You understand how unfair the world can be. He does not. Not yet."

Not in the way he would. The sea would be cruel to them both, stealing away years.

Because yes, Ada could be hard. Ada was very good at being hard. Especially if she could use it to step between Hyacinthe and whatever it was that his mother saw awaiting him.

"An' I got a hotel room tonight if'n you don't got a place t' stay yet," she offered. Because Ada was helpful like that, and hadn't wanted to assume that Dante or Hyacinthe was going to have space for her to crash.
