Urban Survival - The Uglier Side of City Living, Thursday, Period 2

"That week with the gremlins kind of threw me off my groove," Sparkle sighed as he parked his butt on the desk at the front of the classroom. "I was supposed to have a class to talk about squatting before this, but I don't, so I'm going to kind of just cover some major beats."

He took a moment to kind of gather his thoughts, and then shrugged and just jumped into it.

"Okay, so squatting, which some hobbyists - because of course there are hobbyist squatters - call 'homesteading,' is the act of illegally residing on property that doesn't belong to you, hopefully undetected. If you're homeless and you don't have a tent or a friend's couch and you have reason to not trust the shelter, odds are you'll consider this. I did. You'll have to keep an eye out for the cops, and for the owner of the property, and for other people with nowhere else to go who have a mind to set up camp there. If you can find a group of people that you trust to camp out there with you, do that. It never hurts to have someone who can keep watch."

He shrugged. It was just common sense, right?

"You're also going to want to know the difference between unoccupied and condemned. Some buildings are sitting empty because they're a literal threat to life and limb. The floors are rotting or the whole place is a firetrap and it's all liable to come down on you without any notice at all. So keep an eye on that, and walk carefully, because falling through the floor would suck."

He ticked over all of that in his head, and then shrugged.

"That's the safety stuff, anyway. I actually have a final for you today that's sort of relevant to it, too. Remember when I had you guys all find water? I'm gonna send you out to do something a little like that. I'm going to give you a list of places around the island, and I want you to go, check them out, and come up with the positives and negatives of trying to stay in each one, and what you'd have to do to make any of those spaces livable if you did. You can go it alone, or in pairs, or, shit, one big group if you really want. And you don't have to physically visit everywhere on the list unless you're feeling really thorough. Just so long as you come back with something and it doesn't look like you went dicking off to the Perk and sat drinking frappuccinos all class or anything."

Breq had written down a few notes, which she knew didn't exhaust the topic.

The Park
+ Plenty of space
- Fewer protected places than you might think
- People walk past
- Water is contaminated by ducks

The Preserve
+ Plenty of space
+ Large enough to find places where people are unlikely to walk past.
+ Material for building shelter available.
+ Firewood available
+ Small animals can be hunted for food
+ Water isn't drinkable, you need to get it from somewhere else

Vacant Business Space
+ A proper building
+ You might get the heating working
+ You might get the electricity working
+ You might get water working
- Using lighting might give your presence away
- Generally more likely to be detected
- Does anyone own the places at all?

She offered this list to Sparkle.
