Creative Weaponry; First Period, Tuesday [04/03].

Well, Amaya was in a rare mood today, one that didn't strike her very often (because hers was an achingly wholesome franchise), but the type that would have inspired her to hitch a caravan over the mountains to Serenia to see if any ships had come in. Not that she made a general practice of that often, of course, because she also could channel those moods into making stuff, and that was far more productive and profitable, but she couldn't exactly just head out to her forge when she didn't yet have one.

But she figured the danger shop could be the next best thing. In a perfect world, it would be an actual forge, there wouldn't be any kids to teach, and she could sell the weapons afterwards, but you worked with what you could. As it was, the students were finally getting a forging lesson.

"Today we're doing a basic run-down of what I usually do when I make weapons," she explained, once everyone was settled in the Danger Shop again this week, "and that's blacksmithing. It's a lot of fun and I'm sure some of you will find it's not nearly as easy as it looks, but I guess that's the good thing about this set-up here is that there's no harm, no foul if you mess it up. Now, you've got four basic elements to blacksmithing: you've gotta have heat from a forge, a good hammer, a solid anvil, and, of course, metal to work with. We've got mostly steel here, but if you want to play around, I've tossed in a few other metals and you can see how they differ when you use them. Now to the actual metalworking..."

And she went into showing them and explaining to them some of basic techniques and variations of some of the simpler ways to mold metal, which could really fill a whole day if given half the chance.

"That should be enough to get you started," Amaya grinned a little as she held up the little spiral she'd hammered out to show them. "You're probably sick of watching me do it and itching to get to your own, so have at it. Just remember, it takes hours if not days to do a right proper weapon, and this is just to get you guys familiar with how it all works. Feel free to sort of play around with techniques, so what happens when you do this or that, because it's the danger shop and all that. I'm here if you have any questions, and I'm eager to see what you come up with."

And thus she unleashed a group of potentially pent-up teenagers to beat out some very hot and hard metal.

It was cool; Uma was more than happy to take those few seconds to appreciate the image of Tip how and sweaty.

"Yeah," she said, definitely both 'hot' and 'bothered.' She lifted her braids up off her neck. "Kinda wish I'd brought a scarf or something to pull these up with. And worn fewer layers while I was at it."

"I have extra hairties in my backpack," Tip offered. She always carried extra hairties now. It meant she always had them for whatever sword practice threw at her on Fridays.

Tip was now picturing Uma with an up-do. The line of the back of her neck sweeping smoothly down to bare shoulders. . . .

She cleared her throat. "They'd probably tide you over at least until class is over, if you want to borrow some?"

"Yeah, that'd be awesome, actually," Uma said, giving Tip a smile that was more appreciative than predatory for the moment. "I'm not used to anyone else having decent hairties anymore. Once Freddie left the Isle, I was on my own."

"Freddie?" Tip asked, smiling back. She set her tools aside and went to go dig in her bag for her hair ties. They were a little small for braids -- Uma would have to do pigtails at least -- but they weren't any of those puny white-girl hair ties with metal bits or anything. "You don't talk much about the people from back home. The ones who weren't awful, anyway."

Uma could kiss Tip for understanding the distinction in hair ties, even without it being...whatever was going on right now.

"Freddie Facilier," Uma said, starting the laborious process of pulling her hair up. "Didn't really know her. She went to the other school, Dragon Academy along with some--people." Mal. Always Mal. "She's friends with my first mate's little sister. They both managed to get out somehow, and ditched us for Auradon."

Poor Harry. Uma looked away, trying not to look as guilty as she felt.

"Gil says Freddie sounds a lot like me, but Gil's an idiot, so..."

"I thought no one really left your island," Tip said. "You had to escape by like swimming here or something, right?"

. . . Right, now she was picturing Uma all wet. Okay then.

"So, not counting me, six people have gotten off." Wait. "The island."

Better.

"Mal--" From the way Uma said her name, there were clearly issues there "Evie, Carlos, and Jay were invited off by Ben, who was prince at the time. Then Mal came back to slum around and go shopping and ended up screwing around with a genie lamp or something at Doctor Facilier's shop?"

Which also didn't make sense, because magic didn't work on the Isle. But sometimes random things got through. It was like a poorly-written story with four editors or something.

"And Freddie got swept up in it and so did CJ, who was hiding under a table at the time." She shrugged at Tip. "I know, it doesn't make sense. I got this from Harry who heard it from their big sister Harriet after their dad lost his mind on them for losing CJ. Who is like fourteen and perfectly capable of taking care of herself."

"Well, yeah, but -- parents." After several very long conversations with her own mother post-invasion, Tip could see both sides of that one. "That's -- wow. And Freddie was the only other person on the island with similar hair, huh?"

"Well, Cruella De Vil, too," Uma amended. "But she's an adult, so it's not like I'd be bumming hair ties off her even if she didn't hate me."

But...yeah. It was weird how this place had more diversity than her home Isle.

unless we see new characters, in which case this conversation always included them, too

Look, they were in a forge. Fanning would be happening regardless, okay?

This was flirting, right? Tip was reasonably sure this was flirting. If this was in a movie, she'd be 100% rooting for some adorable teen lesbian stuff happening right now.

It wasn't a movie, though, and Tip's brain was too busy quietly shorting out to root for much of anything.

"Fandom's a pretty place," she managed after a moment. "A pretty, pretty place."

And if this were back on the Isle, Uma would definitely be making a move to turn it into some kind of teen lesbian stuff, give or take the adorable. But hooking up was just a thing that happened on the Isle, because someone was hot, or someone was bored, or someone wanted a favor, or even a place to crash that wasn't their usual spot. Hook ups didn't seem to be so plentiful around here and Uma wasn't going to start anything until she'd figured out how it all worked.

It'd be just her luck to find out that messing around with someone meant they were betrothed or whatever, ew.

"Really pretty," she agreed. "Kinda distractingly so. But a little distraction can be fun, you know?"

"Fun, yes." Tip nodded once, a little too firmly. Why was this week so weeeeeird? "Kinda frustrating just now. But fun."

Uma laughed. "The fun usually starts after it stops being frustrating," she said.

And normally, that was when she would make her move, but Tip seemed more confused than into it. And again, Uma didn't want to accidentally end up being betrothed or however things worked around here.

Tip was essentially running face first into the differences between romantic, aesthetic, and sexual attractions. While her hormones were going crazy.

It was a weird week.

"You know, I've heard that," she said. "Never actually tried it myself, before."

"I like it," Uma said. "But everyone around here seems to put a lot more pressure on it than back home, so I'm not starting anything till I know everyone's on the same page."

Uma would never admit she was trying to be reassuring, but maybe there was a little bit of that in there.

Well, either way, it was totally working. Tip relaxed again, about as much as anyone was going to given the current . . . givens. "That is a very good policy," she said. "There's a lot of, like, politics mixed up in all of it for a lot of people. Plus, everyone likes something a little different, right?"

"Well, yeah, but figuring out what you like is a lot of fun, too," Uma said with a wistful smile. "So, what kind of politics are you talking about? Is there some kind of rule about who can hook up with who?"

And people wondered why she chose villainy.

[personal profile] intotheout 2018-04-06 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Tip rolled her eyes. "Way too many. And most of them aren't, like, laws, or anything, just people trying to make everyone do it their way. The only real rule is that everyone involved should be totally down to be involved. Which leads to other littler rules specifying how you know when someone's down for it or not. . . . People can be really bad at that part."

"We're not much for rules back home," Uma drawled, hand sliding down to her hip where the familiar comfort of her sword used to rest. "That's one we do have though. Everybody wants to be there and everybody has a good time."

They were villains but, god, they had morals.

"Bad things happen to folks who forget that."

Tip nodded, then scowled faintly. "People have a tendency to forget that a lot where I'm from. Especially the guys."

'Forget' wasn't even quite the word. It gave people far too much benefit of the doubt, for one.

C'mon guys. Don't do what even the villains wouldn't do.
