Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 20, Period 1, 03.23.06

Tbe Tick was sitting at his desk when the students walked in. "Good morning, students! Please use today to work on your projects a bit more. You still have next week to work on them, but that will have to take place outside of class for the most part. Have fun!"

"Hi," Veronica said, pulling out a chair and sitting backwards in it, leaning her elbows on the back and resting her chin on her hands.

She was smiling, but it was very clearly not a genuine smile.

Angel caught the look. "Um. Hi."

She continued to smile the not very genuine smile.

"So... you and Logan broke up last night? Care to explain exactly what Jaye meant by that?"

"Jaye said what about huh?"

"Radio last night. Jaye said you and Logan, and I quote, broke up," she explained, her gaze unwavering. "So, care to explain? You were pretty adamant on Tuesday that there was nothing going on I needed to worry about."

"We didn't break up!" Angel said. "We just agreed to never see each other again."

Veronica's eyebrows shot up at that.

She continued to stare at Angel silently, hoping it would unnerve him into talking more.

Angel squirmed.

"Well... I mostly said it and he mostly got pissed at me and stormed off?" he offered, as though that would help.

He really should not be trying to do this on, whaddyacallit, oh yeah no sleep.

Veronica blinked. Then glanced across the room at Logan. And blinked some more. There really were no words. Obviously she and Logan needed to talk.

She leaned down, pulled her notebook from her messenger bag and flipped it open.

"So, we're going with the theory that justice is governed by destiny, right?"

Angel was awake enough to be aware that he hadn't totally gotten out of trouble, but that at the very least he was avoiding being thwapped right now.

He could work with that.

"Um, yeah. Destiny, which may or may not make sense."

"I'd have to lean towards not on most occasions," Veronica said.

"Now, we were going to try to tie it in with that cartoon where Daffy gets erased, right?"

"Right," Angel said. "Where Bugs represents the Powers and how they do pretty much whatever they feel like."

"And even when Daffy realizes what's going on, he can't stop it, making him a pawn of destiny," Veronica said. "So, Justice is a pawn of fate?"

"I think Justice is ultimately in the hands of the Powers," Angel said. "Dunno if that makes it a pawn of Fate or not."

"The fate of Justice is in the hands of the powers, much like Daffy's fate is in the hands of the writer, who turns out to be Bugs?"

"Yes," Angel said, pleased. "I think that's it exactly."

"That wasn't so hard, now was it?"

"Nope," Angel smiled. "Go us."

"We make a good team," Veronica grinned.

"Maybe someday we'll fight for justice together," Angel said. For a second his eyes flickered in Logan's direction. His expression flickered as well, but he forced the smile to stay on in spite of that.

"You never know," Veronica said.

"I'd like that," Angel said. And boy was his desk fascinating right now.

"So would I," Veronica said sincerely.

Angel couldn't help the smile that resulted from that.
