Civics, Friday, December 1, 2017
Steve and Tony had made the class travel through the powdered sugar snow to get to Portalocity in order to join Steve at the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in his, thankfully Cheeto-in-Chief-free, universe.
Unfortunately, at least as far as Steve was concerned, it was because he'd been invited to join the President of the United States in helping to light the tree, so that meant he was in fully Captain America regalia as he talked to the class. "Civics isn't entirely about how government functions," he said, "there's also a sort of symbolic pageantry that goes with each country and their specific sets of traditions around major holidays."
Or something. He was convinced they were really here because Tony liked to see him in the uniform.
Tony would neither confirm nor deny that.
"These symbols can help to establish a sense of normalcy during times of crisis or turmoil, such as during wars or political unrest," Tony said. "They can also work as a sense of pageantry to elevate the government into something greater in our minds than it actually is."
Steve nodded. "In America, we have huge events celebrating our Independence Day," he said, "but the President also marks Springtime with the annual Easter Egg Roll, pardons a turkey at Thanksgiving, and lights the National Christmas Tree in December to start the holiday season. There's music and celebrities and it's mostly just a nice press hit of the President doing something fun. He's just like us, except the tree's about 30 feet tall and stays outside."
"If the president isn't a moron," Tony muttered. Because how do you make pardoning a turkey awkward? How?! "So, let's watch your teacher play his part in this. We can get hot cocoa for after to make up for the snow back on island."
Steve's smile looked a little strained. "At least you have good seats. And if you all pay attention, I'll see if I can get Kelly Clarkson to come over and say hi afterwards."

Re: Watch the Tree Lighting
Just another exciting day as Captain America.

Or just disrupted everything by barking at it. One of those.
"Why does he have an A on his face, anyway?" She was muttering to herself as she watched.
