"Pop quiz, of a sort," she said. "I'd like you to respond verbally to several different scenarios - these are actual questions that many journalists are asked before they're hired. There are no right answers, per se."

You have the opportunity to make an appointment to interview an arsonist sought by the authorities. If you inform the auhorities in advance that you plan to do this, your interview can be compromised and quite possibly terminated.

Which is the correct approach?

You, for some reason, are unable to credit a source. However, you didn't directly quote - rather, you paraphrased.

Is this plagiarism?

Should a reporter write a story about a local priest who confessed to a sex crime if it will cost the newspaper readers and advertisers who are sympathetic to the priest?

Under what circumstances do you identify a person who was arrested as a relative of a public figure, such as a local sports star?

Freelance journalists and photographers accept cash to write about, or take photos of, events with the promise of attempting to get their work on the AP or other news outlets, from which they also will be paid. Is that ethical?

Can a journalist reveal a source of information after guaranteeing confidentiality if the source proves to be unreliable?

Barbossa signed in.

"They kin be hearin' the story jes like everyone else," Barbossa said. "Get me story first, then they kin find the arsonist on thar own. It be not me job t' do theirs fer them."

"Hello, Mr. Barbossa," Rita said with a broad smile. "I hadn't heard that my favorite student and seen fit to meander back."

Barbossa scratched at his nose. "I be thinkin' it be paraphrasin'. He snickered. "Besides, if they be too afraid t' put thar name next t' what they be sayin', I be not seein' them havin' the guts t' complain about bein' ripped off."

"Absolutely," Barbossa said. "That be news. Screw the advertisers."

Barbossa grinned. Because, well, pirates aren't exactly known for their merciful behavior. "Under all circumstances," he said.

"Sure," Barbossa said. "Get money from where ever ye can, that be me motto."

"I be thinkin' the guarantee be more like guidelines, meself," Barbossa said. "And if they be not holdin' up t' their end o' the accord, I be seein' no reason why I should be held t' me word either."

Barbossa grinned back. "I had t' see a man about a boat, ye see," he said. "Gettin' back t' me roots, as it were."

He pulled a ~~hugely tacky~~ gold necklace from his seabag. "I be bringin' ye a ~~bribe~~ gift t' apologize fer bein' gone. I were off doin' a bit o' art reclamation, as it were. Redistribution, ye see. The Spanish be not needin' t' have all the treasures o' South America, I be thinkin'."

Kara signs in.

"To get the story and to hell with the police," says Kara.

"Probably."

"Yes," Kara replies. "If no one wrote anything because they were worried about losing readers or advertisers, nothing interesting would get printed."

Kara laughs. "Always."

"Oh, how thoughtful," Rita said, taking the necklace with a smile. "It's lovely. And you're completely forgiven for your absence. I haven't been penalizing you in the slightest."

"Screw ethical, everyone's gotta eat, you know?"
