Artifact Restoration, Tuesday 2nd Period

Today, the Danger Shop looked a lot less like a workshop, and a lot more like a very fancy gambling den.

"I know I've brought up resources a couple of times already, kids," Aphra said. "But cash flow is very important, parts, power, food, they all add up. So you've got to look at your options there.

"Now, obviously the most logical way to get your hands on some credits is by selling your finished work, but of course you need something to sell in the first place, so that's a long term goal." Plus, by now they should have figured out that long term planning was not always Aphra's strong suit. "You've got some other options for start up capital, like grants and loans, but you're just as likely to get caught by the small print and end up never seeing a single cred-chip, there's getting a job, but that's boring and will cut down on the time you spend working on artifacts, running scams and pulling heists are always fun and lucrative, but apparently I'm 'not supposed to encourage unethical or illegal behaviour', and there's also gambling. Which is a terrible, risky idea, but a lot of fun."

So guess what you were doing?

Breq had tried various games throughout her life. Every world she had been to so far had had some kind of games. She sat down at the dejarik table and looked at the holographic game pieces. She would need some instruction to figure this out.

Ringo sat down opposite Breq and stared thoughtfully at the board. "Is it, um, like chess?" It didn't exactly look like chess, but she didn't really have a better guess.

Breq looked up. "I don't play chess," she said. "So I can't answer that. I don't think it's like counters, but you don't know that, do you?"

"No." Ringo shook her head, then grinned slightly. "I don't play chess, either, but I've seen it. I think this looks different?" She reached out and experimentally poked a button on the board causing one of the monsters to lumber forward toward the middle.

"Oh! Hey, that's pretty cool."

Breq, who didn't look surprised, pressed another button, and another one moved.

"So, that's step one solved."

"What? We know what some of the buttons do?" Ringo asked, poking at two of the ones on her side in rapid succession.

Which resulted in one of her monsters moving, and a loud, angry buzzing sound.

"Whoops. Guess that's not right."

"Perhaps not," Breq said, pressing a few buttons herself. One of her monsters fell over.

"That might be one point to you, although I'm not sure what happened."

[I have no idea how this game works myself!]

"Yay!" Um. "I wonder how you win."

Ringo shrugged and poked another button, sending the monster that had ended up near the middle of the board heading back to her side. "No, no! Go the other way!"

It didn't listen to her.

[ooc: Me neither! Which, I think, is to our advantage!]

"My turn." Breq enjoyed this more than her voice and expression betrayed. She pressed another button, and her fallen monster got to its feet again, jumping up in the air.

"I think that's good. As for winning," she said. "I have no idea. Pushing the other players monsters into a corner?"

[You are probably right.]

"Only one way to find out, I guess?" Ringo grinned as she stabbed the button she'd started out with at the very beginning, sending her monster back toward the middle of the board.

Breq pressed the button opposite Ringo's, and their monsters were now facing each other.

"Let's see if they can fight."

"Oh, good idea!" Ringo frowned, concentrating hard on the buttons in front of her. "Maybe it's this one?" She poked one, and her monster sort of roared and then jumped into the square Breq's monster was in. The two of them struggled back and forth for a couple of seconds before Breq's monster tore the arm off of Ringo's and then struck out with it, causing Ringo's monster to flicker and then fade off the board.

"Hey." Ringo pouted. "I was the one attacking. I should have won."

Said the girl who didn't know any of the rules.

"One of the things about attacking is that you don't know if you're going to win or lose," Breq pointed out. "Especially if you don't know the rules."

Breq pressed a button and the monster with the torn off arm seemed to fall asleep.

"That was unexpected."

Ringo sighed. "This game is so confusing." She glanced over at Aphra. "I don't think I'd make very much money playing this one."

"I think if we were going to earn money, we would have to learn the rules," Breq said, stating the obvious. "We still have a chance."

This was said with her usual lack of expression.

That got a little shrug out of Ringo. "Well, I don't mind trying to figure things out." It was actually kind of fun?

She reached out and pushed another button, sending one of her monsters around the edge of the board.

"Me neither."

It was a pleasant way to spend this class, even if they failed to pass the assignment. Breq didn't think Aphra would be upset anyway.

Yeah. Ringo didn't really think they'd get in trouble for, well, almost anything.

"I wonder if this is even meant to be played in the time we have left for class."

"I wouldn't think so. Unless I won when my monster tore off the arm of your monster, and this is the second round," Breq said, looking up from the game board.

"You think we should try to be faster?" Breq asked, looking at her. She then pressed the buttons quickly in a random sequence, causing the monsters to move across the board, a few of them trying to hit Ringo's monsters.
