Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Sure, someone could question just how all that ice cream was staying cold and not-melty without any immediately apparent means of refrigeration?

But really, of all the should-be-impossible things Fandom makes possible on a near-daily basis, this one at least was fairly benign. And delicious. So shh, don't question it, just enjoy it.

[OCD Up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Unlike Ringo, Aloy hadn't needed more than two conversations to realize her experience and her world weren't the norm here. "I don't mind you asking, but you won't know what I'm talking about," she said. "The Embrace. Nora lands. Ring any bells?"

Ringo's lips curled up sheepishly as she shook her head. "Not at all. Guess you've had this particular conversation more than once?"

"You're the third," Aloy said dryly. "At this point it's just easier not to assume anything about any of you."

"Yeah." Ringo laughed, sending her hair swaying with a shake of her head. "I probably should have remembered that particular rule myself, considering how long I've been here."

"So why didn't you?" Aloy asked. "Everyone keeps telling me it's normal to be from somewhere else."

"Good question." Ringo pursed her lips. "Maybe it's because while people are from all over, most of them have big cities of various types?"

"That sounds like kind of a lame excuse, though."

"There's Mother's Heart. I've never been," Aloy said, a little bitterness dripping from her voice. "But that's all slopes and pathways, so I hear."

"Oh?" Ringo looked suddenly interested. "Slopes aren't a big deal with AirTrek as long as the surfaces are solid." Then she stilled slightly. "Though I guess you wouldn't know for sure." Since she'd never been.

"Is it very far from where you're from?"

"It's at the heart of the valley I live in," Aloy said, "And the paths are soil, not solid."

"Oh."

Wait.

"Is it hard to get to?" Is that why she'd never been?

"They don't let outcasts in there."

Ringo started to ask about that, but then realized it might be an insensitive question, so she shook her head instead.

"That sucks." Yeah, it was vague, and unclear whether she meant the rule or the being an outcast thing, but Ringo didn't want to say anything to offend the other girl.

"You get used to it," Aloy said. "I don't want to deal with a bunch of stodgy old matriarchs pushing me around anyway."

She shrugged. "So where you're from is more like here?"

"Um, not exactly like here? I mean, I'd seen places sort of like this where I'm from, but Tokyo is a huge city, so you have to travel outside to find something like this island."

"It's... bigger than this...?" Aloy said slowly.

Because this was pretty big.

Ringo snorted. "Oh, not even close." She pursed her lips. "Like, I don't know, thousands of times bigger than this?"

"That seems... unrealistic," Aloy said.

"Yeah?" Ringo considered that, then shrugged. "Maybe you just have to see it. Hold on." She pulled out her phone and started doing some quick image searches, trying to find the right photo to convey Tokyo.

"Everyone's really quick to pull those out, aren't they?" Aloy said, tilting her head at the phone.

Ringo laughed. "Well, they're pretty useful! I mean, look!" She turned her hand so the screen was visible to Aloy. "That's an aerial shot of Tokyo. Well, part of Tokyo. That's most Shinjuku."

Aloy's eyes went big and so did the frown on her face as she stared at the pictures. "So that's what they look like when they're intact," she breathed.

"What?" Ringo asked, frowning herself as she looked closer at the screen, trying to figure out what the "they" in the photo was supposed to be.

"Those," Aloy said, gesturing in the... general direction of skyscrapers. "I've heard stories about them."

"Oh, the buildings?" Ringo grinned. "They're pretty great." A ton of fun for AirTrekking.

"Actually, if you want to see some in person, Baltimore's right across the causeway. I mean, it's not the biggest city, but they've got some serious skyscrapers."

"Baltimore," Aloy echoed. "That's a city? How many people live there?"
