Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Sure, someone could question just how all that ice cream was staying cold and not-melty without any immediately apparent means of refrigeration?

But really, of all the should-be-impossible things Fandom makes possible on a near-daily basis, this one at least was fairly benign. And delicious. So shh, don't question it, just enjoy it.

[OCD Up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Tip had a plate of food and found herself a spot by the edge of the picnic to perk, and snack, and take photos. She hadn't gotten her camera out properly in ages, and it was always fun to get shots of the new students.

It wasn't that Breq was bothered by having her image recorded -- she assumed that was what that piece of technology did. No one was likely to recognize her physical appearance after all. It was more that she was unused to being the target of it, and in this new place, it seemed strange.

Ok, she was bothered, but she wasn't going to admit that even to herself.

She looked back at the person holding the camera, face expressionless.

"Hi." Tip lowered her camera. "Do you mind? I can make sure you don't end up in any shots if you'd rather."

She tried to be considerate with her kind of voyeuristic hobby.

"No, it's fine." There was no danger to it. It didn't bother her. "Is it your duty to record the event or do you do it for enjoyment?"

"It's for fun," Tip said. "I work at the library, but I don't think anyone's recording what goes on here other than the squirrels."

"Squirrels?" She couldn't be referring to animals, could she?

"They report for the radio. It's super gossipy."

Breq was still reluctant to assume they were talking about animals, so she asked: "How do they collect their information? And it is distributed to everyone?"

She would prefer them not to be anything similar to a station AI, especially not if everything became public knowledge.

"Tiny notebooks?" Tip guessed. "I think they just run around watching everyone and taking notes. Whatever they report goes into the morning radio broadcast, so in theory anyone on the island could listen. There's also a podcast version, but they're really easy to distract. Or bribe. Last fall they went on vacation all semester."

"I see." Breq decided she would have to ask more about the details later.

"Are you from this island? From this world?"

Tip shook her head. "I don't think anyone is? Maybe the principal's daughter, I guess, but most of us come from other places. I'm from a modern Earth that got invaded by aliens a few years back."

Breq was slowly getting an idea of this place, she thought. A meeting point between universes would be a good place to hide and a good place so make plans.

Perhaps this was where she offered some information about herself?

"I'm Radchaai," she said. Not true, but even in Radch space she could have passed for it. "You might not have heard of us."

"Would've guessed it was your name. Soooo -- nope. Is that a culture? A species?"

Oh, yes, they hadn't exchanged names.

"I'm Breq," she said. The name still felt new to her. She had chosen it about half a year ago, but the people she had stayed with during that time hadn't asked for it a lot. "The Radchaai are citizens of the Radch, and I suppose you could say it's a culture. I don't think it matters much here, though. What is your name?"

"Hey, hey," Ringo called, tossing Tip a wave with her free hand, the other involved in the incredibly important task of balancing her own plate of food. "Whatcha up to?"

"Taking pictures of the newbies," Tip said. "You?"

"Eating way too much food, of course." Ringo grinned. "Did you already do that part, or is that for after pictures?"

Tip shifted to one side a little, revealing her own fully loaded plate. "Neither. I'm multitasking."

Ringo barked a laugh. "Should have known I could count on you to have your priorities straight. Food and newbie watching, the two most important activities for any newbie picnic."

"Of course! I already did my duty as a big sibling. Now it's time to relax and enjoy myself."

"Oh, who's your new little sibling? Someone awesome?"

"Her name is Aloy. She's from a seriously different universe, so it was hard to tell who she is when she's not busy going 'I DON'T KNOW WHAT ANYTHING IS', but so far so good."

"Oh, wow. Sounds like you're going to have your hands full with her, huh?" She cocked her head. "Need any help? My little sibling looks like she's got a pretty good head on her shoulders." So she might have some time available, you know?

"Sure. I mean, I'm not saying I'm not up to the task, but I think offering a hand whenever you see someone wandering around looking faintly baffled is a good idea, so."

"I think I can do that," Ringo grinned. She looked around, scanning the newbies for anyone who looked especially lost or baffled. "Think she's going to be okay out there without you?"
