Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The fall semester was about to get into full swing, but summer wasn't about to let go of the island just yet. The sun was out, the temperature was holding steady at a comfortable 80F/27C, and most importantly, the tables were beglittered.

Speaking of tables, there were of course the ones that were filled with a vast array of food and drink, and also the ones with nametags and lists to facilitate the meeting of new roommates and siblings.

There was room to sit, room to sprawl, room to walk around and mingle... and it was a big lawn, so if you needed to get away from the crowd for a bit, room for that too.

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

So, she was going to a school. That could be considered a waste of time, but considering her situation, Breq had decided that it would be useful for now. She had picked up a name tag and attached it to her shirt.

They were outside Radch space, which was also a good thing, for now. Which also meant there was no need for gloves, and Breq wasn't as bothered by that as a Radchaai would have been. In order to fit in -- although looking at the crowd here, who did? -- she had pulled them off and put them in her pocket.

She was supposed to have a sibling, too. Eric Bittle. Hopefully she had a nametag.

Breq didn't mind sharing a room, as long as the person she was sharing with was too nosy. Having to come up with too much of personal history at short notice wasn't something she had planned for.

She looked around for someone wearing a nametag saying "Yang Xiao Long".

So, what on Earth did a Sidon look like? Peridot had been on Earth long enough by now to know that Earth naming conventions often had little to do with outward appearances, but that wasn't helpful in the least. It simply meant that anyone here could be a Sidon.

"I wish it was as easy on Earth as it was on Homeworld," Peridot muttered before climbing up onto one of the picnic tables, throwing her arms into the air, and shouting, "Hey! Is anybody here a Prince Sidon?!"

The direct approach was often the best approach, in her experience.

To say Aloy was actively looking for her sibling would be to deeply overestimate the amount of knowledge she currently had about her predicament. But there was an equal parts fascinated and worried young Nora wandering the picnic, dressed in practical leathers and several bead necklaces.

She was also holding a bow, but that was a detail she wasn't currently too concerned with. (Security was, and she'd soon be liberated of it. That would probably concern her.)

Sidon had been frowning at the table of nametags with a mild bit of distress over the unfamiliar characters on them that all seemed like gibberish to him when the sound of his name drew his attention up and toward the source. Such a big voice from such a little creature! It was hard not to be instantly amused, though he hoped he hadn't somehow made a bit of a faux pas and was in trouble. Still, he made his way over, lifting a hand in greeting to the tiny (SO TINY!) green person.

"I am a Prince Sidon," he said. "The only Prince Sidon, I should imagine, unless it is a very popular name for royalty here."

Oh, it was going to be so much worse.

The nice thing about robotic eyes, Summer was realizing, was that she could spot a nametag from a mile away, so she knew exactly who she was going for when she wandered into the area with newbies before they dispersed further into the crowd and threw out her arms excitedly as her proximity was deemed appropriate for human stranger-to-stranger contact.

"Ohmygod," she gushed, "you're, like, totally Paris, aren't you? I'm Summer." Those hands went to cover her chest with the impression that it was just fluttering so much with excitement. "I'm your Big Sibling, which means if you have any questions, or need anything, like, totally at all, you come to me, and I will totally help you out. Are you doing, like, okay so far?"

Sam could still remember his first welcome picnic with Dean, but he also felt like he couldn't possibly have ever been that young. It was still weird to be among the teachers, even though he'd done this before, but he'd managed to arm himself with some coffee, and a friendly expression.

Even standing on top of the table, Peridot found herself looking up (SO FAR UP!) at the Prince Sidon that had approached her.

"I don't think it is," she decided, pondering how this Sidon would compare in height to, say, a Jasper or any other Quartz soldier. He was probably strong, too! "I haven't met many people on this planet who refer to themselves as royalty. I'm Peridot," she gave a little wave up at him, "and the school has assigned me to be your... sibling."

That was still a weird word, on the tongue of a being from a species that had no concept of family.

"Sibling?" It was a word that caused a small pang of melancholy deep within him, far underneath all the bubbling excitement he felt for his new adventure. He pushed it back under, though, with a nice layer of confusion laid gently over top. "Assigned? How do you mean? Is the societal structure here so embedded in a particular familial structure that we are to be placed in artificial groupings to resemble those bonds?"

He sure wished they had included some of this in that brochure!

"Apparently," Peridot replied, shrugging her shoulders. "I don't entirely understand familial structures, personally, but it's my understanding that it's my job to assist you in becoming accustomed to your new surroundings." She paused, and then added, "If that's something that siblings do?"

Sidon thought about it for a moment. "I suppose it's very much what a sibling would do," he concluded, brightening with a small and a small laugh, and his enthusiasm kept building from there, "if one was more knowledgeable of a situation than the other! Wonderful! Well met, sibling Peridot!" Insert patented fist-pump and sparkly shark grin pose. "I shall entrust you to be my faithful guide on this journey, and I hope you are up to the task. I admit, I feel quite a bit like a fish out of water here so far."

It would be a shame if weren't for the fact that Prince Sidon planned to use that one a lot anyway.

He couldn't help chuckle. "How kind of you to offer, Peridot! You're so good at this sibling thing! But, no, I will not need assistance in finding the water. The Zora are an amphibious race, and even a young hatchling could locate the nearest source of water wherever he may be. I have seen the ocean coming in on the magnificent bus, and what a glorious sight to behold! Though I prefer fresh water, I must admit that I would likely be splashing along the coves and bays right now if it weren't for my sheer excitement to know more about this land and the people within it. Tell me, Peridot, are you a native of this island, or do you come from a different place like myself and the others I met on the fantastic bus over here?"

"Wait, I get another sibling? Like Ruby isn't enough trouble on her own?" Yang asked rhetorically as she tried to find a spot to slap her nametag on that wasn't immediately on top of her chest. "Oh god, this sibling and Ruby are never allowed to meet."

Mostly because Yang would never hear the end of it.

Also a basket hanging off one arm for his new sibling, as soon as he found them.
