The Magic of Plants, Wednesday, Per 3

"None of you are thinking about the usefulness of gourds enough!" Karla declared as the class discovered that the room had been overtaken by a slew of dried gourds. "They're edible, which is always a plus, and even the ones that you don't eat can be useful to you. With a gourd, a knife, and some time, you never have to worry about lacking a canteen, a bowl, or a pouch to store things in."

She'd had some concerns about handing out knives to the class, but, hey. She was a Healer. And at least some of these students had been handling weaponry for as long as they'd been alive. Probably.

"I've included everything you need to turn gourds into useful items, so if you're ever stranded in the woods or a vegetable garden, you'll be all set."

Lucille didn't have anything against gourds. She watched the students, relieved the buying bottles usually wasn't a problem for her.

Tip hadn't honestly thought much about the usefulness of gourds at all, other than knowing a variation of the "follow the drinking gourd" song from elementary school history class. So she was happy to listen and watch and learn.

Also: carving things. Good times.

Tip wasn't sure what she'd actually decide to put in her new DIY gourd storage container. But it was going to be pretty, dammit.

Maybe she'd give it to her mom. It could go with the ashtray that J.Lo had made her in his pottery class last year.

Kaylin set herself to work and managed to turn out a fairly decent dipping gourd.

Oh, this was familiar! Some Dalish tribes had a similar kind of craftsmanship, and Keeper Marethari had picked up a little bit of the technique at the last arlathvhen.

What basics of it she'd passed on to Merrill thus far weren't enough to guarantee she'd be very handy at it, but with some work Merrill managed to turn out functional, if not finely-crafted, gourd containers.

Which she then proceeded to decorate with little curlicues and vine-like patterns.
