International Cuisine | Friday, 3rd period

"Today," Hannibal said once everybody had arrived, "we are going to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. That is the capital city in a country far to the east of here. The Mongolian people come from a nomadic tradition, and much of their cuisine is meat- and dairy-based. There are also a number of influences from neighboring traditions."

He led them through the portal and onto a fairly ordinary-looking street across from, of all things, a mall. "Our restaurant for the day will be Modern Nomads." There was a coffee shop across from this one, too. At least it wasn't an American chain? "You will find many traditional foods here, from bone soup to noodle dishes. Lamb is a popular meat."

He led them into the restaurant. "They use local meats and ingredients, and also include plenty of greens for those of you who might prefer not to eat so much meat. I'll be getting several of the sharing plates for the table. The local language is Mongolian, but many will also speak some English. Or," he added with a nod to Kaylin, "Chinese."

They were brought to their table, and he gestured for them to be seated. "Please enjoy, and as always, let me know if you have any questions."

Oh, Peridot was totally licking that food. She was licking it good. And possibly still wearing a big happy stupid smile on her face as she did so. For non-food-related reasons.

She found broth from the soups in particular to be quite interesting, and within a few minutes of trying her first kind, she'd gotten a few small bowls so she could stick her little blue tongue into a bit of all of it.

Hannibal grinned at her. "You seem very happy today, and I don't think it's only the soup."

Peridot beamed right back up at him, pausing in her broth-sampling to do so.

"I've had a good week," she shared. "One of my peers tried to throw something I've spent months working on into the ocean with no provocation."

That wasn't normally something to be pleased about.

Hannibal raised an eyebrow. "I take it they did not succeed. Or possibly that you learned something new from the experience."

"Both!" Peridot threw her arms up into the air in jubilation. "I'm not an inferior Gem!"

Yeah, she got all this from Lucille trying to ruin her day.

"Oh?" Hannibal asked, intrigued. "And how did you discover this?"

He had nothing to compare her to, so he could make no judgment on the rest.

Peridot wiggled a little in her seat.

And then she reached out for a fork, which wiggled around a little before floating over to her hand.

"Behold."

That was definitely a flying fork, there.

Hannibal smiled. "Ah - you're telekinetic. And you didn't know it?"

That was definitely a flying fork. He wasn't going to judge; maybe she needed to start small.

Peridot shook her head.

"Only with metal, as far as I can tell. And I didn't! Era Two Peridots aren't supposed to have powers."

Or so they'd been told, anyway.

"It's why we're outfitted with limb enhancers. To make us worth something."

Look, Peebee was one day going to try live spitbug in another galaxy. Weird food was not going to phase her, and she was trying some of everything with gleeful abandon.

A little weirder than last week, sure, but Summer was happily trying a good mix of different things. Especially since her expectations were subverted once again, figuring they'd be sitting around some campfire surrounded by yurts in the Mongolian tundra or something. What? She was surprisingly uncultured for a girl who'd been to different dimensions sometimes.

Hannibal made a moue of distaste. "Or so that you weren't aware of your own worth. I am pleased for you; that seems a useful ability."

Peridot hesitated, and then actually frowned a bit for the first time since Tuesday.

"Or... that." She looked thoughtfully at her fork, watching it bob up and down as she did the same with her finger. "I wasn't made until after the rebellion. It would be... a logical reason to lead us to believe we can't... do things..."

"What do you think of our foods so far?" Hannibal asked. "Are they very different from what you're used to?"

"Very logical, if unfortunate for you," Hannibal said. He watched the fork bounce and reached out slowly to set it to spin. "How many other Peridots do you think might have found this out?"

"Hello, Dr. Lecter," Summer said, after quickly dabbing a bit of food from a rogue noodle from the corner of her mouth with a napkin. "It's good! Really good. Though, maybe not as good as other food I've had this week."

What? A little buttkissing never hurt anyone.
