Class had been alerted that they would be meeting at Portalocity unless otherwise specified, and that their destination this week would be somewhat cooler than Baltimore currently.

When they all showed up, Hannibal nodded to them. "Welcome. The idea of this class is that each week we will experience a different cuisine of the world. Those of you who are not from Earth may not be aware, but this world is home to thousands of different cultures and cuisines. Even those of you that are from Earth may not be familiar with many of the sorts of foods available to you."

He waved them through the portal that appeared, where they ended up on a street in front of a building with a tree growing through it.

"Welcome to São Paulo, Brazil. Brazil is the largest country on the continent of South America; São Paulo is its most populous city. There are influences of both the indigenous peoples and the Portuguese empire in its culture and food. This restaurant is Figueira Rubaiyat, so named because of the tree it is built around. Some of the food is raised and grown locally. They employ a number of meats, from beef to octopus; they also take particular pride in their desserts. The local language is Brazilian Portuguese, but they should also speak English here, or Spanish if you prefer."

He led them in and they were shown to their table. "Please enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions."

[OOC: Anybody that wants to drop by Portalocity and catch them will be welcomed on the field trip, this week or any week! Auditors encouraged. :) ]

Hannibal nodded. "I think we can manage that."

Kaylin beamed at him. "I'm glad I can do this class again."

"So am I," Hannibal said. He grinned. "Careful, or I'll make you my TA next term."

Kaylin laughed, then sobered. "I'm about to be a senior. And then I'm going to be old enough to be a Hawk, so I won't be here any more."

Maybe next summer since she wouldn't technically be quite old enough till the fall, but...

Hannibal nodded. "Only if you're still here and you wish it," it promised. He smiled at her. "I'm well aware that nothing will stop you from being a Hawk. How is everything going for you at home?"

She beamed at him. "Wonderfully. Even Marcus had to admit that I was doing well here and Sarge is pretty impressed with the martial arts I've learned."

Her eyes went wide and she blushed. "I'm sorry, Hannibal. I never thanked you for setting that up. I've been working very hard and learning as much as I can there. I even learned a lot of Mandarin because it's easier to understand things in people's own language."

Hannibal smiled. "You're very welcome, and I'm pleased to have helped. And Mandarin - that's a language I only know a few words in, so you've learned more than I have. Congratulations."

"No, thank you," Kaylin said sincerely. "I am very thankful and grateful for you arranging this. It's hard, but the discipline is fascinating."

"It is, isn't it?" Hannibal said. "I'm pleased you're enjoying it, and that it's helped. Is there anything like it among your Hawks, or will you be bringing something new home to them?"

"Nothing," Kaylin said, shaking her head. "It's a totally new thing. My sergeant was a little skeptical, but I think he can see the potential of it."

She beamed at him. "I beat all the partners he sent at me. Not that he sent the best fighters, but there were some tough ones."

Hannibal smiled. "Felt good, didn't it?"

She nodded. "They'll be deciding whether or not I can be a Hawk in less than a year, and all this sort of stuff proves I can do it."

"I have no doubt of it," Hannibal said. "So long as you remember that knowledge and discipline are not only for fighting."

She nodded again. "They're also good for learning the law. I have almost all of it memorized."

Yes. All of the laws of Elantra. No doubt this was part of what so frustrated her teachers. Language, laws, fighting? Easy. Etiquette, history, math... anything else? Forget about it.

That was definitely part of it, yes.

"You know the laws," Hannibal said. "Do you know their context and history? Memorizing them alone is useful, but the rest is fairly necessary, too."

"I just have to know if someone broke the law, not why somebody 400 years ago made it the law," Kaylin protested.

"No?" Hannibal asked. "And if they have accomplices, people who you need to find, would it help to know why they were breaking the law and who else might agree with them?"

Kaylin looked at him a little blankly. "No. I'm just supposed to know the law and catch the bad guys. I don't care why they broke the law."

Unless it was something like stealing food to eat, but that didn't happen much in Elantra. And in the fiefs it didn't really count because it was that or die.

Hannibal shook his head. "And if there are others breaking the law, and they have nothing in common but their ideals, how will you catch them?"

"Then the Wolves would be assigned to the case," Kaylin explained. "They do more of the investigating."

"And the Hawks and the Wolves don't work together?" Hannibal asked.

"Not really," Kaylin said. "The Hawks and Wolves and Swords all have their own positions. We share information, but we all have our own separate jobs."

"So you would give the information to the Wolves, and they would tell you where to go to arrest people?" Hannibal asked.

"I'd give the information to Marcus who would tell the Hawklord and one of them would tell us who to get," Kaylin said. "Mostly though, I'd be walking a beat."

Oh, she couldn't wait to be able to do that for real!

"Ah." Hannibal nodded. "Forgive me, then; I misunderstood the nature of the Hawks' position. They would be more like policemen, and less like detectives. The two are often intertwined here."
