"Today we're going to make a dish that's a lot harder than it seems like it should be," Steve began. "Microwave popcorn."

"Have you ever smelled burnt popcorn?" Tony asked, making such a face. "It's awful. Stinks up the room for hours. So, it's clearly a fine art."

Yes, the fine art of microwave cooking.

One that these two, despite being very smart, hadn't figured out. "The first thing to know is that the popcorn button on the microwave is not to be trusted," Steve said.

Tony nodded in full agreement. "It's a trick to ruin your entire evening. You have to stand there and wait for the moment the popping slow down and hope you times it right."

Or get distracted by something and come back to charred popcorn. Guess which happened a lot.

"You also have to make sure it wasn't just slowing down for a second and then speeding back up," Steve said. "Because then you just get a half-bag of popcorn and a lot of unpopped kernels."

Which was sad.

"And please remember this is for specifically microwave popcorn. The stovetop stuff isn't meant for this." Tony learned that after blowing up a microwave in college with Jiffy Pop. In his defense... he'd been sleep deprived.

Steve winced. "We've gone through a few microwaves," he admitted wryly.

"Today it's your turn," Tony said, clapping his hands together and smiling cheerfully. "If you succeed, you get popcorn."

"If you don't, you get drenched by the fire suppression systems," Steve said.

...in his defense the Jiffy Pop didn't say not to put it in the microwave in big enough letters.

Steve was there, too, regretting everything as the room filled with the smell of burning popcorn.

"Uh, hey, Captain Rogers?"

Summer had a look on her face, the kind that was trying to be straight and serious but was doing a really, really poor job of it. And she had a big Tupperware container in her hands that she'd brought with her to class.

This...did not bode well. Oh, she was probably going to hell for this, but Summer could not help herself.

"Yes, Summer?" Steve asked, looking a little apprehensively at the container.

"So, I was bored at work the other day," Summer started by explaining, "and was flipping through some old cookbooks, and I saw something that made me think of you, and I had some time on my hand, so I thought, you know, why not? I think you'll like it."

And she handed the Tupperware open, cleared her throat to keep from laughing as she choked her way through, "Go on, open it."

And when he did, he would find none other than a most excellent egg, shrimp, and pea jello mold. Which was apparently a thing that had existed in the world at some time other than this.

Yup. Definitely going to hell for this. But how could she not do it???

"Wooooow," Steve said, eyes going wide. "This is...quite a thing. Thank you!"

Guess what's for dinner, Tony?

Somehow, the restrained and polite reaction made it all fifty times better. Summer's head bobbed in a nod. "You're very welcome! I figured, since you helped inspire me so much with the beans in the jello mold a few classes ago, that this was something you'd really appreciate."

"I really appreciate all the effort you went to," Steve said sincerely.
