Sociology 310 and 500 Class Meeting

Welcome to the first class meetings for Sociology 310 and Sociology 500. If you have signed up for either class, please consult the roster to confirm your enrollment.

Sociology 310: Special Topics - Death and Dying

Please sign in below in the appropriate space. The syllabus for this course has been posted.

This class period will serve as an introductionary exercise. Please state your name to the class, and share why you are interested in the course material. The subject matter is difficult, and it is important to be respectful of the viewpoints of others.

In class we will read Walt Whitman's poem To One Shortly to Die. Please feel free to share your thoughts in regards to this poem. Although not a written assignment, your participation will be noted.

Sociology 500 - Sociology of Deviance

Please sign in below in the appropriate space. Copies of the syllabus for this class can be located on my office door.

Please introduce yourself to the class and the professor. Your assignment for next class is to write a short essay that defines deviance. There is no wrong answer, this is merely to understand the different perspectives of all students in this seminar.

[OOC: Sorry for the delay, and lumping these together. I was slammed by RL unexpectedly. Grissom will be around to speak to students if they have questions this afternoon, however, all classes will be slow-played now and in the future for everyone. Play as much as you can regarding assignments, comment at least that you attended. Classes will be stored in my memories so you can catch up. Next week classes will run on a normal schedule and happen separately, and "coursework" will be laid out for the semester in part. Thank you.]

Your pardon for interrupting, Grissom. Angelus, you have detention this weekend.

The next time you want a girl's attention, try to get it in a manner that won't freak her out or send teachers after your blood.

"Excuse me?" Angelus gestured to the classroom around him. "I was just doing my essay, I don't know what you're talking about."

As we CSIs would say, the evidence never lies. *a very hard smile* Show up like a good boy and I'll tell the principal to hold back the holy water this time.

"You wanna do me a favor and at least tell me what I'm being convicted of?" Angelus asked.

Daggers pinning roses and bears to doorways went out in the nineteenth century. Maia found your actions rather distressing. And I'm in the mood to give out detentions right and left. Enjoy.

*turns to leave*

Update your will, to be on the safe side.

*leaves*

"This is discrimination!" Angelus called after her, not even half-seriously. "It's an unfair bias against my species! I should call my lawyer!"

"Angelus!" Grissom barked. "If you want detention for the next month, keep up your behavior. I will not have you speak to Ms. Sidle, or any of the staff that way. Understood?"

Angelus sat up straight, the picture of the perfect student. "I'm sorry, teach," he said, his voice dripping with contrition. "It's just so hard for me. I mean here I am, metaphysically challenged already, and now I'm told my efforts at wooing another are something I should be punished for. You can see why it might tug at my heart strings a little."

If you feel that your actions may have been misunderstood, you need to clear that up in a respectful manner. Try writing a letter to Ms. Sidle explaining your position, because I can tell you from experience shouting at her will not be effective. Other than that, I will not undercut Ms. Sidle's authority.

Grissom doesn't buy it for a minute, but also can't stomach more bullshit.

And next time, if you like a girl, just send her a plant.

"A plant," Angelus repeats, with a thoughtful nod. "Right. Without a dagger in it, yes?" He says the last bit with a hopeful note, his attitude that of someone who is learning a valuable and life-affirming lesson.

Without a dagger, yes. It is generally frowned upon to woo a woman with something that could also be considered a threat on her life. Wait to bring up weaponry until at least the second date.

Grissom ponders his statement for a moment, recalling a few of the women he has met here, but decides for the moment he will stick to that thought as a good influence on Angelus, even though it may not be true.

"Without a dagger, got it," Angelus carefully writes that down in his notebook. Then, his eyebrows quirking with inspiration, he raises his hand. "Oh! Ooo! Teach! Question, right here!"

'What have I gotten myself into?' Grissom thinks.

Yes, Angelus?

Angelus beamed to be called on. He folded his hands in front of him on his desk, sitting up straight as he spoke. "Dr. Grissom, when I send that letter to Ms. Sidle as per your excellent suggestion, do you think it would be a good idea if I also included a plant, to show her that I've learned my lesson? I was thinking maybe a nice begonia."

[OOC: *dies laughing*]

[OOC: *look of pure innocence*]

[OOC: You only think he's joking, btw.]

"The family Begoniaceae is lovely, as far as succulent herbs go, but perhaps in this instance you may want to refrain from sending any extraneous plant life. Considering your earlier behavior, she may misinterpret the gesture. Although... it would make a lovely gift of thanks if you can resolve your issues with Miss Sidle."

"Is there a gift that you would recommend, Dr. Grissom?" Angelus asked, his hands still folded primly in front of him. "I would so hate for there to be any chance of being misinterpreted."

Don't get ahead of yourself, work on that letter first. Nice stationary, good penmanship, express your apologies and explain the...uhh... dagger. Then we can talk potential gifts, okay? One thing at a time.

Grissom rubs his beard in an effort to keep from laughing, but he is also confused. What other gifts are there to buy for women besides plants? He may need a consult.

"Penmenship counts?" Angelus gave a geniune smile. "That's great. I just so happen to have excellent penmenship. Thanks, Dr. Grissom. Hey, you've been so nice and fatherly to me, is there anything I can get you as a gift? Especially seeing as how now I've got this begonia going to waste?"

"Excuse me Dr. Sidle? Detective Mike Logan fandomtownies PD."

Holds up photo:

"We're currently looking for a student that goes by the name washwaslaconic. We're hoping that we might be able to use your expertise in forensics to track his location."

Mike waggles his eyebrows.

"Whatta ya say? A little professional courtesy?"

Has this student gone missing or is he a suspect in a case?

By the way, waggling your eyebrows does nothing for me.

Mike smiles his trademark "shark" grin.

"Ouch! You don't even give a guy a chance, do you?"

Shakes his head and gets back to the "job-at-hand".

"The kid is missing. Appears to be a rash of that going about lately."

Nods to where Briscoe is talking with Grissom.

"My partner and I will be visiting

sheldonjsands house later this evening and could use your assistance. I believe we may enroll your colleague in this as well"

[OOC: Probably open a post for the investigation around 11:00 pm EST. If you can't make it we'll leave a "post" open for you to do your work.]
