Getting to Know Your Own Backyard | Monday, Period 2

Class, junkyard, ship. Nothing was really different this week from any other, unless one counted that Kanan was slightly less hungover than usual. And while he was leading the students to the cockpit, he took a wider berth around the table in the common area than he normally did. He'd already knocked his elbows on the edges one too many times today.

"So the next planet out is called Saturn," Hera said. "It's got nicely developed rings, which can be a problem to navigate in some places, but planets with rings can also have wonderful skyscapes. Unfortunately, this is another one we won't be landing on."

"Fortunately," Kanan added, "that means we might get to see Hera do some fancy piloting, just so long as the rings aren't outright volatile."

Because playing in space debris was fun. But not if it was, like, space debris with an atmosphere that would ruin the paint job or something.

"Nope," Hera answered cheerfully later, as she finished scanning them. "Water ice and rocks. Limited atmosphere, mostly oxygen and hydrogen."

"Too thin to breathe," Kanan mused as he leaned over her shoulder to peer at the readings. "Too thin to do much of anything, really. But the ice and rock clusters that make up those rings should be fun, anyway."

"Yep." Hera grinned.

"And as for the planet itself," Kanan noted, "we've got ourselves another gas giant, from the look of it. A rocky core surrounded by hydrogen and helium, nothing we can get out and walk on. There are a few clouds of water, but that's nothing that's going to do us any good, really."

"It's got a few atmospheric bands, but nothing as distinct as Jupiter's," Hera added. "Though apparently there are some interesting patterns around the poles."

"Then maybe we can swing around that way and take a look when you're done playing in the rings," Kanan decided. And then, with a smirk, because he was a bit of an ass and razzing the students was a favorite pastime of his, "provided we make it back out of the rings, of course."

They would absolutely make it back out of the rings, between Hera's piloting and the fact that Kanan would sooner out himself as a Force user than get smashed by an icy rock orbiting some barren gas world in a backrocket galaxy somewhere.

And besides, that's what the ship's guns were for.

And Hera was having fun. It wasn't the most challenging flight she'd ever had - for one thing, the Ghost was in perfect condition, and for another, there was nobody shooting at her - but she still had to actually pay attention and do things.

And Chopper was complaining at her, which he hadn't gotten to do in a while, so he was happy, too.
