Philosophy of Food | Friday, period 1

Class was back in a normal classroom this week, though the students could move their chairs however they liked.

When everyone had arrived, Hannibal leaned against the desk and spoke.

"While I like to think that food can truly be an art form, I am well aware that not everybody shares that opinion. Nor does everybody have that option. Art, preference, culture - many things affect how we think of food. One of those is economics. Availability." He pursed his lips. "Not everybody gets the best food. Not everybody gets food they can eat. Some people are lucky if they get anything."

He gestured at the six silver-covered dishes set on the desk, all identical. "So. Each of you gets one of these. No peeking. When you each have your own, we'll uncover them all. I'll get whatever's left. If you don't like what you have, feel free to try to get something else. Barter, bargain, trade, give away, or steal, whatever you like, remembering that you may still need to see each other later. Consider this a hands-on experience."

Dish 1: Several pieces of sashimi
Dish 2: Nothing
Dish 3: Hamburger patty, no bun or accompaniments
Dish 4: Canned fruit salad
Dish 5: Tenderly cooked duck
Dish 6: Wheat bread

[OOC: If you play and want to do it randomly, just click a dish below and see what you get. But feel free to check them all out and mod your results for the most interesting playing. :)]

Talking about how some people got nothing made Summer feel a slight pang of guilt for her plan to bribe her food-deprived brother with food, buuuut....she didn't feel that guilty. It wasn't her fault Morty was being a stubborn butt.

Not that it mattered what she chose, Summer was thinking it would be cool to have super-scent to guide her hand to pick a good one, just for weird bragging rights and to elict envy. So, after sone careful deliberation, she finally reached out to remove the cover from dish number four.

"Huh." Canned fruit salad. She could live with that. It would be perfect for her imaginary jello mold she threatened Takeout class with earlier that week. Mwa ha ha.

Maria looked at her plate that looked like it had some kind of sushi on it. She was pretty happy with it.

Maria didn't even think about her answer. "We split it up so that we all get a bit of something." She would always answer like that, she had experience. "I have more than enough to share."

"I'm down with sharing," Summer agreed cheerfully. "In fact, I'll even let you guys have all the cherries!"

But let's be honest, those cherries were the worst.

"Probably more willing, even," Summer reasoned, "because then everyone's getting something from everyone else. It's even more egalitarian that way. When you have nothing, it's kind of just charity, well-intentioned as it is. But if you were contributing, then it's more even."
