Getting to Know Your Own Backyard, Monday, Period 2
Once again, class was to meet in the junkyard. Not because this was a trash class. Not even because the Ghost was a trash ship. The Ghost was an excellent ship. And the roof of the MCA probably couldn't support her weight. Suck it up, kids.
"Huh," Kanan mused, smirking a little. "We got people back for week two. Good. Get on the ship, and we'll talk about planet number two on the way."
"This one's called Venus," Hera said, pulling up the information she'd gathered in advance. Terrestrial, no moons...unbreathable atmosphere. Hm. We'll have to take more readings when we're up there; if the pressure's as high as expected, we might be staying in the ship."
She waited until everybody was secure, then finished her final checks and lifted off.
"This planet is second from the sun," Kanan said as they traveled, "mostly just because that seemed like a good way to keep track of which ones we have and haven't visited. Because planets don't orbit the sun in unison with one another or anything like that, distance from the sun itself doesn't necessarily mean we're traveling less or more from Earth, since they'll all be at various stages among their own paths of orbit."
Planets didn't tend to line up neatly in single file the way all the textbooks made it look like they did.
"Right." Hera nodded. "Though this one is actually closer than the last one right now." She checked its readings. "And hotter." She glanced at Kanan. "What do you think?" They might manage with envirosuits again, but it was a little iffy; she'd go with just a flyover of the surface herself, probably, but she'd be willing to entertain a second opinion.
Kanan leaned over the instruments, blinked at the readings, and then gave a low whistle and shook his head.
"That's showing an average surface temperature of 462 degrees celsius," he noted, and then glanced at the class over his shoulder after doing some quick math in his head. "That's 864 fahrenheit. Hot enough to melt lead. We had mining droids on Gorse who couldn't stand up to that kind of heat. I wouldn't try to push the envirosuits that far."
Weren't you relieved, Rhys?
Hera nodded. "Between that and the air pressure, best not to. The Ghost'll take it, but we'll just be doing a flyby today, folks. So, man the viewports. I'll take it down slowly so you can get a view of the atmosphere, and we'll go down and see the surface, too."
"The atmosphere is kind of special," Kanan noted. "In that 'carbon dioxide and sulphuric acid' kind of way. Pretty sure even if the suits could handle the heat and pressure, we'd have to contend with making sure they don't melt afterwards. That'd be Chopper's job."
Kanan was calling 'not it.'
Hera rolled her eyes. "And then I'd have to buy new ones." Whether because of the trip or because of Chopper's "help."
She pulled into a low orbit and glanced back to check everyone was still good. "We ready?"
"All clear," Kanan decided, after another pause to look at the readings. "I mean, I've made rockier fly-bys of Nar Shaddaa before." Less because of the atmosphere and more because of the traffic, but details. "Let's bring her in."
