Archaeology for Fun and Profit! [Tues, 1st Period]

Finding out about the Danger Shop had been a delightful surprise given the average level of tech about this place, but even Aphra needed time to familarise herself with entirely new hardware and software. So reluctantly she'd settled for one of the 'normal' classrooms today.

Which didn't even have holoprojecters. Honestly.

Once it looked like she had roughly the right number of students, Aphra turned the chair at the front desk around and flopped down into it backward, forearms dangling over the backrest.

"I'm Doctor Aphra and given some of the things I've been hearing I should probably assure you that I'm actually qualified to teach this subject," she began. "Which is archaeology in case some of you just dropped in because you're bored.

"But what is archaeology?" She drummed her fingers against the chair. "Well, essentially it's grave-robbing with fancier paperwork. In both cases you go somewhere people used to live, dig up the place, and take their stuff. Sometimes their corpses too. Only difference is that paperwork."

"Buuuuuuuuuuuuut..." Aphra drew out the word. "That paperwork makes all the difference. See you get the same loot, and the same dead bodies if you're into that, but archaeologists take notes and verify their finds, which means their old, dead stuff is worth a lot more." Academically and monetarily. "They become artefacts, and you can learn from those, including where to find more artefacts.

"Still, much as I love the sound of my own voice, apparently I'm supposed to do introductions this week, so we'll do that then an exercise so you can understand what being an archaeologist is all about."

Aphra pointed to a random student. "You with the face. You're first. Who are you? Why are you here? What's in your pockets?"

Rhys did indeed have a face. So.

"Rhys," he said, actually looking slightly interested in this subject despite the potential danger. "I didn't actually sign up for this class, but it seems okay."

Because motherfucking vault hunters.

Aphra made finger-blasters at Rhys while making a mental note about his cybernetics. Those looked interesting. "Pockets."

It was an important question, Rhys.

Oh sure, make him check his inventory.

"Um. A broken personal shield and some gum?"

That shield thing explained his constant head trauma. And survival rate.

Knowing your inventory kept you from losing more limbs, Rhys.

"Interesting." There was absolutely nothing to worry about with how she said that. At all. Really.

No, those happened via poor choices.

"...is it?" Rhys asked, making a face. "It doesn't even work right now."

"Jason," he said with a wave. "I didn't sign up for this class either, but I'm not complaining." If nothing else, he was pretty sure Billy would love hearing about this class, which was a good enough reason as any to take it.

"In my pockets, um... my phone?" And also his Power Coin, but that was supposed to be a secret, so. Not getting mentioned.

Let's face it, Aphra would judge him if he had mentioned it. Then probably try to steal it.

"Comm device, good."

"I'm Mara Jade," Mara said. "I signed up because it seemed different from the other classes that have been here and I like learning."

She patted down her black jumpsuit. "I have a few credits, my comlink, my Perk frequent customer card, and a vibroblade."

"Someone's prepared." Though what a girl with a nice Core accent was doing with a vibroblade. "Not from around these parts?"

Mara shook her head. "I'm from Imperial Center," she said. "Do you know where that is?"

"Heard of it." And any kid calling it that this far out was probably a true believer. "Not really my scene."

"Peebee," she said, despite the initial temptation to make up something ridiculous. "Here because why not, really, and in my pockets I have . . . a very sparkly rock, three pieces of candy, and my crumpled up name tag from the picnic."

That was a lie. She had none of those things in her pockets. Or anything at all, really.

"You'd be surprised how useful sparkly rocks can be," Aphra said idly, trying to place Peebee. The kid was either the weirdest Nautolan she's ever seen or something new.

"Oh, not at all," Peebee replied. "It's way too easy to distract some people with sparkly rocks, for one."

To be fair, she could be described as pretty weird, depending on who you asked.

"That it is," Aphra agreed with a smirk.

Aw, Peebee, you weird little non-Nautolan, you she liked.

"I'm Kaylin Neya," she said, "And someone else signed me up for this course. And I don't have pockets."

Exactly. She had a pouch sort of thing tucked under her tunic.

"Pouches?" Aphra'd spent enough time with Krrsantan to know Wookiees didn't wear pants or anything with pockets.

"Sort of," Kaylin admitted. "It used to have a few coins in it."

"Hi, I'm June," June said, nice and relaxed. She could never be sure this fast, but this teacher seemed mostly okay. "I'm here because it sounded like an interesting thing to take a class on. And my pocket has, um ... lip gloss, my phone, and my room key."

"That's three for comms." There was probably a reason Aphra seemed more interested in the last question than the first two. It was probably nothing to worry about.

Alluka was... mostly confused. But she had a face! That was a good start.

And it sounded like they'd get interesting things and possibly dead bodies, so she was okay with that.

"Alluka," she said, and after a moment's pause where she considered introducing her stuffed giraffe, she carried on without bothering, "and, and I guess it sounded interesting? I'm never really sure what to pick for classes, so I picked this one. In my pockets is some chocolate, my toy flower, and my room key."

Her phone was probably under her bed? She wasn't really sure.

"Keys and candy, also popular choices," Aphra mused.

"Ano..." Shiemi stood. "My name is Shiemi Moriyama. And I signed up for this class because it sounded interesting. I already spend lots of time outside and digging up things!"

"No need to stand, kid." Aphra wasn't exactly the kind of person for formalities. "And your pockets?"
