Show and Tell, Tuesday, Period Two

Funny thing about teaching a no-brainer class? Sparkle looked way more comfortable up at the front of the classroom this week than he did at the front of the classroom last semester. This one, hopefully, was going to be way less intimidating to teach than that one about 'urban survival.'

Which was not a hard bar to skip over, admittedly.

"Hey, guys," Sparkle said, offering people a little grin. "I'm Sparkle," yes, really, shut up, "and this class is basically my excuse to keep my teaching cred without putting out any real effort."

He gave the students in the room a grin. Maybe he was even joking! Who knew!

"Fortunately, it's easy marks for you guys, too, right? If you aren't from a place where 'show and tell' was a normal thing when you were growing up, it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Presumably it's supposed to help people work on, like, public speaking or whatever, so sure, we're gonna go with that. You bring something in, show it off, and then tell the class a little bit about it. I'm not going to leave you at a total loss for what to bring in every week, hell, I'm gonna try to keep this fun, too, but this week we're gonna have to keep it pretty simple. Name, how you ended up in this class, and show off and tell the class about one random piece of clothing or item in your pockets."

He grinned.

"I'll start. I'm Sparkle, I already told you why I'm teaching this class, and..." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue, kind of plastic-looking bill. "... And I guess I still have Canadian money on me because, hell if I even know. This is five bucks. Five bucks Canadian. It's pretty useless here, but it's got some old guy on the back and space dudes on the front? I think that's the Canadarm or whatever it's called. You can pass it around if you want while you guys do your introductions, just so long as I get it back when you're done. And go."

In which Sparkle basically confesses that this is his no-brainer activity for the semester. Go on and pass around his weird semitransparent plastic garbage money.

Pinkie did not even blink at the name "Sparkle". Sure, she was more familiar with it as a last name — specifically one of her best friend's last names — but as a mononym, it didn't throw her in the least.

Name, why you're in the class, and one random thing in your pockets or whatever! Sparkle's keeping this easy for the first week.

"I'm Ringo Noyamano. I thought it would be interesting to learn about things that other people are excited about?" Ringo had loosened up a lot over the two years she'd been on the island, so the bow she included with her introduction was quick and informal.

"And is it cheating if I share something from my backpack?" Ringo looked hopeful. And for anyone who knew her, that might lead them to suspect that she had ATs in her backpack. Which, well, she did.

"So long as you don't have to go running back to your room for something, it's all good," Sparkle replied, grinning. "You have something cool in there, huh?"

"I do!"

Ringo beamed as she rushed over and grabbed her bag. She pulled out a pair of AirTrek. They weren't shiny or anything, as they were her everyday pair, and had seen a lot of wear.

"Tada!"

"Tada!" Sparkle echoed, grinning. "Nice! What are those, like, rollerblades or something?"

This was where the 'tell' part came in, Ringo!

"No!" Ringo exclaimed, shaking her head emphatically. "It's way better!"

She was still beaming. "These are AirTrek. The original concept is, like you said, based on inline skates, but these have very powerful little electric motors in them that allow them to go really, really fast."

Really fast.

"With practice, you can use them to do things like ride up walls and jump between the rooftops of buildings and stuff."

Wasn't that the most awesome thing you'd ever heard?

"Omigosh!" Pinkie glee'd. "My friend Rainbow Dash would die for something like that!"

"Yeah?" Ringo grinned. "What about you? Want to see if we can find some that'll fit you?"

"Do you think we could?!" Pinkie was super into this idea.

She would absolutely end up leaving several Pinkie shaped holes in walls around Fandom.

"We can't know until we try, right?" Ringo beamed.

And, hey, what was a little property damage in the interest of AirTrek?

"That's so true!" This was clearly the beginning of a beautiful and potentially horrifying friendship.

The most magical kind of friendship.

"I don't have the stuff with me right now, but we could get together sometime soon and try it!" That wouldn't end in disaster, would it?

Without a single doubt.

"Yay!" Pinkie glee'd. "Let me give you my number. I'm the best texter!"

Her texts were almost entirely made up of emojis.

Ringo grinned, pulling out her phone. "Awesome!"

She was going to text Pinkie right there in class, yes. Hopefully Sparkle wouldn't mind the not-at-all-subtle distraction?

Mara couldn't say that this was an excellent class to practice lying with a straight face, could she?

"I'm Mara Jade," she began. "I didn't know about Show and Tell, so the best way to learn is by taking it, right?" She smiled. "I have a comm device from my home galaxy?"

Hey, she was in good company when it game to the lying with a straight face thing, at least.

"Hey, comm!" Sparkle grinned and waved a hand at Mara encouragingly. "Sure, go on and tell the class about that, why not?"

Because comms were fun, okay? And they were one of the few things that Sparkle could actually tell had changed since Atton's time. He wasn't a great judge for the technological advances of a galaxy far, far away.

Hers was so much shinier than Atton's, too!

"This is a comlink," she said, holding it up. "It's a little like an iPhone, if you know how those work, but it can call another galaxy. It can also project holos in three dimensions instead of just having to hear someone or looking at them on a screen."

And she might have put Candy Crush on it, too. Shh.

Hey, sometimes you just needed a little Candy Crush on your comm.

"It can record holos too, right?" Sparkle had to check. "Like, if you didn't have a mirror around and wanted to know if your hair was looking good from the back too, could you totally just, like, project a holo of yourself and turn it around to be sure?"

This was why the GFFA wasn't ready for Sparkle.

"I've never really thought of that," Mara admitted. "I suppose I could. Or you could, if you want to try it."

"Ooo! Can I? Better to know what all the best toys are capable, right?"

See Sparkle. See Sparkle enthusiastically making grabby hands.

Mara handed the comlink over. "Just don't delete anything."

"Wouldn't dream of it," Sparkle replied brightly, poking around to try to get his bearings on the comm system. It was fortunate he'd learned to read Aurebesh so that he could order things at diners on Coruscant without asking for the menu in High Galactic, he decided.

And then paused.

"... Is that Candy Crush?"

"...no?" Mara tried.

"Looks like Candy Crush to meeeee," Sparkle singsonged. "Oh my god, that's awesome, how did you get that on there? I need to get that on my datapad..."

He was just barely resisting the urge to open it and play a level or two, yes.

"I know a slicer," Mara admitted. "You have a datapad?"

"Atton gave me one," Sparkle confirmed, passing the comm back and grinning. "Mostly it's just got Aurebesh lessons on it. And nerf recipes."

"You like nerf?" Mara was a little too excited to hear that.

"Sure do," Sparkle laughed. "Atton swears by the stuff, so we usually have some on hand. It's... You know, I actually like it better than beef?"

"Hihihi!" Pinkie beamed at the class. "I'm Pinkie Pie! And I love Show and Tell!" She may have eventually been banned from participating when she was in elementary school. It wasn't her fault everyone had been jealous of her baby alligator. "Today, I'll show, ummmmmmmm . . ." She patted herself down at mega high speed. "My skirt! This is my very favoritest skirt of all time! I wear it almost every day! It's a happy fun fuscia color that complements my skin tone and it has these sweet little yellow and blue balloons on it, see?" She pointed out the balloons.

Then she pulled one of them off, blew it up, and tied a ribbon around it. It floated lazily in the air above Pinkie's head.

"Who wants this one?"

"You... you have actual, functional balloons on your skirt? Oh my god, that's awesome!"

There was a pause, and then Sparkle had to add, "Wait, do you, like, breathe helium?"

Pinkie shrugged. "Your balloons don't float when you blow them up?"

"Not when I blow them up with my mouth, no," Sparkle replied, blinking. "I'm pretty sure that isn't usually how air works."

Why was this, of all things, what surprised him? On an island like this? Seriously?

"But balloons are more fun when they float."

Because physics hinged on fun.

"Hey, hey, I'm not arguing that," Sparkle replied, smiling wryly. "It's just that I'm pretty sure most people have to actually get, like, helium tanks to fill their balloons with if they want them to actually float."

This was really the hill Sparkle was willing to die on, apparently.

"That's very sad for them."

"Right?!" Sparkle threw his hands into the air and waved them around a little bit. "My entire life is tragic!"

So sad. Mister heavy-as-air breath.

You know, because he's here and why not.
