Getting to Know Your Own Backyard | Monday, Period 2

Class had been ~~handwavily~~ informed that they would be meeting each week at the junkyard instead of a classroom. You're...welcome?

When they got there, they'd find Hera and Kanan waiting, with the Ghost prepped and ready to go right behind them.

"Hey, guys," Kanan said, giving a casual little wave of one hand at the group assembled. "Welcome to a little class I like to think of as yet another shameless excuse to go on field trips every week. Only, these ones are probably going to involve less food than the last ones."

Sorry, guys. Hannibal wasn't in on this round.

"My name's Hera, and I'm the captain for these trips," she said. "This is my ship, the Ghost. I'm pretty new around here, so I'm still learning about the local area."

"The planet and the solar system both," Kanan added, grinning faintly. "For those of you who don't already know me, I'm Kanan. I have been around a while, but since my last ship was a big piece of scrap," seriously, nobody missed the Expedient, "I haven't gotten much farther than the moon here, myself. Cute moon, by the way. Bouncy."

"We don't have star maps of this galaxy, and the locals haven't gotten far off the planet," Hera said, "so that's what we'll be doing - checking out the local system. And taking some readings to figure out what's beyond it, but that'll be all the sensors, so no need to worry about that part."

"If there are any planets that are safe to get off the ship and explore, we'll try to do that whenever we can," Kanan added, grinning. "Which... might not be often, but the Ghost here will give us a great view all the same."

They wouldn't even have the great 'reality whipping by' effect that hyperspace offered, though. They weren't even leaving this system!

Earth: Still cute.

"There's just a few ground rules before we get going," Hera said. "I've locked off the personal areas of the ship, and I expect you to respect that. If I tell you to do something, you do it - I'm the captain, and I intend to keep us all safe. And whatever you do, don't bother the droid."

"No, really," Kanan added, "don't bother the droid. He takes his job seriously and he's got a stunner built-in and set to 'annoying.'"

That was just for you, Kanan. He kept that setting for you.

"Okay, so let's all get on board!" Hera said more cheerfully. "We can do introductions on our way to the first planet, which is named Mercury."

Your name, what you want to learn from this class, whatever you want to share with the class. And the teachers. And the little orange astromech who is sitting off to the side of the loading bay, brandishing a built-in electroshock prod.

Seriously, don't poke the droid.

Rufus wasn't going to poke the droid. Though he'd be lying if he denied contemplating how to make someone else poke the droid.

... For science. Wait.

... maybe the teacher of his Sciencily class would go for it. Something to think about for later.

"Rufus Shinra," he said, lifting one hand slightly. "My home doesn't have space travel, though we do have a space program in it's rudimentary stages. Curiosity brought me here."

"Hey, Rufus," Kanan said, giving a casual little salute in lieu of a wave hello. "Welcome aboard. You know much about this solar system at all, or is that all part of the curiosity?"

"All part of the curiosity. I've looked up the names of the planets in this solar system," Rufus said easily, "but I don't know much else."

Well. He knew the one paragraph descriptions of each planet that pretty much any search brought up. But that hardly counted as real knowledge.

"Well, then you're in good company," Kanan replied easily. "Neither do we."

This was going to be a great semester.

Rufus didn't laugh, but he did smile a bit.

"Given a day or two, I'm sure I could direct you both to some books that might help, if you'd like," he said lightly.

Rufus was teasing. This was going to be a good semester.

"I'll keep that in mind," Kanan laughed, shaking his head. "If nothing else, it'll be good to know the names of the planets in order before we head to them."

Rhys gave the robot a wary little wave and kept a safe distance away. At least it wasn't annoying like a Claptrap.

"I'm Rhys," he said slowly. "I didn't really pick the class. So... yeah. Are we going to get personal shields and O2 kits for this?"

He pronounced that as 'oz' because it permeated Hyperion too.

Chopper was annoying in entirely different ways!

"We aren't going to throw you out an airlock just to see what you can see," Kanan replied, amused, as if that was somehow going to assuage Rhys' fears. "If we do walks on the surface, everybody will be kitted out so you don't boil or asphyxiate or freeze to death, that won't be an issue."

Because they cared.

Rhys let out a breath and gave that one a thumbs up. "Great. Awesome. Looking forward to the near death experiences on weird planets."

He was so sarcastic.

"These aren't inhabited, right?"

"As far as anyone on Earth is aware, there isn't life on any of the other planets in this solar system," Kanan replied. "We can do scans before we land just to be sure, but from what I've seen of this place so far, I'm inclined to actually believe them on that point."

One of the few.

"I think I'll stay on the ship," Rhys decided slowly.

"Eric Bittle," he said. "I'm from... a version of Earth pretty similar to what's across the causeway, so we haven't done the whole sending-people-to-other-planets part. I'm curious about what they're like, but not curious enough to attempt to get a degree in astrophysics or something just for the chance to someday go exploring. So... space tourism." Because why not?

"Hey, I can appreciate a little space tourism," Kanan mused. "You have a favorite planet, Eric?"

Khadgar reeeeeally wanted to poke the droid, but he could behave himself a little. "I'm Khadgar, and I want to learn anything I can from this class. Interplanetary travel isn't a thing where I'm from." At least, not yet it wasn't.

"Don't worry," Hera said, "I'm sure you'll get there eventually. If it's a bit overwhelming, just let us know, but hopefully you'll enjoy the travel."

"Oh, I'm sure I will. I'm really excited," Khadgar admitted. "And I promise not to touch anything we're not supposed to touch, unless it's an accident."

"Thank you," Hera said. "And if you do touch something accidentally, please let me know as soon as possible, in case it's important."

"My name's Rey, and I haven't been much of anywhere so it'd be nice to see new things," she said.

The droid was cute. But she wasn't touching it.

"Well, welcome aboard, Rey," Kanan said, nodding at her in greeting.

Even though it wasn't his ship. Because that's just how he rolled.

"Hopefully this system has something in it that'll catch your interest. Hell, if nothing else, the view'll be great at least once or twice, I'm sure."

"Hi, Rey." Hera gave her a little wave. "Hopefully we'll all get that. Welcome aboard."

"I'm FN-2187, and I thought it would be useful to get a better idea of the layout of the local sector."

"Can't hurt, right?"

Force, somebody needed to give this kid a better name. Kanan gave FN a little nod, and a quick glance toward Hera to hopefully indicate that FN was pretty okay, even if his name was very, uh, Trooper.

"With any luck we'll be able to hit up a new planet each week. Or at least that's the plan."

Hera shrugged back at him. The kid didn't seem to be any obvious danger, just a little strange.

"That's the plan," she agreed.

"Hi," Hera said. "You're not local either, then?"
