Psych 101 (Monday, 03/20/2006, 3rd Period)

"Okay, everyone, last week we looked at the Asch Conformity experiment. Now I want you guys to take a look at the information on the scientific method I've copied below put on the board. If you were going to be running the Asch experiment, what hypothesis would you have come up with before you tested your results?"

The Scientific Method
1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena.
2. Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena.
3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations.
4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments.

Jenny nodded. "And sixty percent of the time, the subject did go along with everyone else. Actually, the researchers had theorized that much lower numbers of people would conform to an obviously erroneous answer."
