Discovering Earth | Friday, period 2

"So," Kanan said, grinning faintly as he looked around at the class, "I guess this week, we're taking in an Earth city. I mean, not that we haven't been to Earth cities, but we haven't spent much time just appreciating the... cityness of them."

Or, 'cityness.' When you grew up on a planet that was a city, anything Earth had to offer was pretty much just getting chucked up onto the 'cute' pile. It was getting to be a pretty big pile, here.

"While we could go back to Tokyo," Hannibal said, "I thought we would stick with a city where you all speak the primary language. The largest English-speaking city in the world is New York, so we'll be going there."

And yes, he was aware it was likely small by galactic standards, Kanan, but it was a perfectly decent-sized city.

Cute decent-sized city.

"So, we'll be setting down in a place called... Central Park?" Kanan glanced at Hannibal for a moment to be sure he was getting that right. "Which is apparently pretty, you know, central. Plenty to see both in the park, and in the city streets outside of it."

And a big, public green area was something Coruscant didn't have, Kanan, so there.

Hannibal nodded. "Central Park stretches a long way through Manhattan, so you can travel through or along it." He passed out paper maps to anybody who wanted them. "I've marked the locations here of the main library, Times Square, a few notable restaurants," because Hannibal, "the major theaters, and the garment district."

What? That wasn't just Hannibal; it was a classic tourist destination.

He definitely hadn't marked the location of Trump Tower. Though he wasn't ruling out casing it himself for later.

And Kanan... wouldn't even know what that was. He was mostly just looking forward to wandering in a city again.

"We'll have one portal at the end of class, and another this evening, if you'd prefer," Hannibal said. "Enjoy your day."

Except you, Kanan. You had an appointment with shopping. Whether you knew it or not.

In a city.

Take a map, if you want. Especially if you don't have a phone.

Library, garment district, delis, Broadway, the sky is the limit! (Also the ground, the water, and the bridges, but details.)

Once they tag in.

I've been to New York City precisely twice. Once for Spamalot, and once for Marvel Studios. Because doesn't everybody?

Hannibal would be kidnapping Kanan to get him proper clothing.

And probably a phone, because seriously, Kanan.

... But what if Kanan didn't want to be kidnapped for either?

Not that he'd put up much of a fight, really, but he just wasn't a shopping kind of guy.

... I have never been, but I would go for Marvel.

Tough. Hello, Kanan.

Hannibal smiled and herded Kanan to one side. "We never did get you proper clothing, and you definitely could use a phone."

He wasn't going to bother with this motive being ulterior.

I had a job interview!

I didn't get it. Oh, well.

"I maintain that there's nothing improper about the clothing I have," Kanan said, though he was smiling wryly as he did so. "But I guess I'm stuck for it, now."

Kark it, fine, he'd shop. Maybe he'd pick up something he could catch Hera's eye in.

Not that, uh, he was trying to catch Hera's eye. Or anything.

THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO NEAT THO.

I went once as part of an arts trip in college, and once a few years later for a Xena convention.

The other time was to see Les Mis. Because this is me, so of course it was.

Times Square was almost a bit too busy for Cosette, but she did end up finding her way over to Broadway, where -- for some reason she couldn't quite explain -- she ended up lingering outside the Imperial Theatre for a while.

. . . and then kept going down the street and discovered Shake Shack, which was an entirely different but nice experience.

"I'll clothe you entirely in plaid," Hannibal lied breezily. Honestly, why everybody seemed to think he wanted to dress them just like himself was beyond him.

"I mean, sure," Kanan replied, and then added, just as breezily, "but you're paying."

Plaid wasn't exactly Kanan's thing any more than shopping was. But 'free' was a great price.

"Or the school is."

Hannibal would find a way.

"Don't worry; it should be relatively painless. I won't even insist upon a tailor." Hannibal turned to head for the store. "While we walk, take a look around at the people's outfits. Tell me what appeals to you and what doesn't."

"Ooookay." Kanan shrugged, looking around as they walked. There was still enough chill in the air that he was mostly just taking in people's jackets, though. "I've never really been terribly picky before, you know. I don't have an eye for this sort of thing at all."

Were they clothes? Yes. Could he hide a blaster under his coat? Even better.

"If you know what you like, that's the important thing," Hannibal said. "Would you prefer tighter clothing, more fitted? Or something with a bit more flow?"

"Fitted but flexible," Kanan replied. "I wear my long coat around, sure, but if I'm going to be doing less gunslinging and more..."

He waved a hand around vaguely, which was apparently supposed to indicate that he'd be using his lightsaber more.

"... I'm going to want something that won't catch while I'm moving around."

Which he would be doing a lot of. And besides, he really wanted to steer clear of anything that might even remotely be mistaken for robes.

With Hannibal there, there would be no danger of anything remotely mistaken for robes.

He nodded and led the way to Massimo Dutti (https://www.massimodutti.com/us), which he had decided upon in lieu of the places he tended to prefer; it seemed a little more Kanan's speed. "So, something you can move in and that won't get in your way. Any particular colors?"

"Uh."

Kanan, that was not a helpful answer.

"I like green?"

No reason.

Of course not.

"Green." Hannibal nodded. They would find him something green, then. And possibly some other things that would suit his complexion and coloring.

"Okay." Kanan paused, and then exhaled, looking slightly relieved. Like hey, maybe all he had to do was just answer Hannibal's questions, and he'd end up with clothes that were reasonable and functional. Which... was generally how clothes shopping worked, granted. "Preferably something I can wear armor over, if I need to. Between living on the island and... well... mostly living on the island, I guess..."

What he was getting at was that he figured he was going to need to pull out his saber again eventually, and he wasn't exactly the best Jedi he could be, and armor couldn't hurt.

"What sort of armor?" Hannibal asked. "Will you need clothes to act as padding under it, or something less bulky so that it will fit over them?"

"Probably just some arm plating and a shoulder guard," Kanan replied, shrugging a little. "Pauldron, rerebrace, vambrace... I'd be wearing that over my shirt."

Pauldrons didn't really go well underneath, at least.

Hannibal nodded. "So, a little padding, but not too bulky."

He stopped at Massimo Dutti and waved Kanan in. "We should be able to find decent clothing here that will hold up to your daily needs, yet still be stylish."

"If you say so," Kanan replied, actually kind of cheerfully as he stepped inside and peered around. "Generally I'm function over fashion whenever I can manage it, but if this stuff's fit for both..."

He leaned forward to peer at a shirt, and then grinned and shook his head faintly.

Heh. Buttons. Fancy.

Hannibal raised an eyebrow at him. "What is it?"

"Buttons," Kanan explained. "We don't see those often back home. Maybe on dress uniforms, that sort of thing. But even that's rare."

"They're more decorative than other forms of fastenings," Hannibal observed. "You're used to more utilitarian sorts?"

"That would be understatement," Kanan mused, shrugging his shoulders a little. "But... generally, yes. A long coat over a tunic and some pants is just about my speed. Bonus points if they match, but first and foremost they have to be durable."

Especially given the kinds of work he tended to find himself doing.

Hannibal nodded. "Clothes these days have become more and more disposable. Cheaply mass produced, and easy to discard, but not created to last. You'll do better buying something more well-made that will stand up to actual use."

Hence the high-end department store. Hey, at least he wasn't taking you to a tailor.

He found a pullover knit toward the green end of khaki and held it up to Kanan.

Kanan accepted the offered garment and looked at it thoughtfully.

"It looks warm," he observed, tilting his head at it. "That's good."

It... was good, right? He had no idea where the weather was planning on going from here.

"Useful in our current weather, or if you're still here in the Fall." Hannibal picked up the first shirt Kanan had seen, then looked around; almost immediately an employee was there asking if he could help.

"This, in perhaps a light yellow or a stripe?" Hannibal gestured at the top Kanan had. "To go with that."

The man found the shirt in a light yellow with faint grey check, then also came back with a pair of chinos, some slim-fit jeans, and a blazer. Hannibal nodded his approval.

"Helpful," Kanan remarked, kind of at a loss for what to make of the service. He eyed the clothes that the man had brought thoughtfully, and then after a moment, reached to take them, to get a better look. "What would I wear this for?"

He was looking at the blazer, yes. It didn't exactly strike him as 'wearing under some armor' fare.

"Over a lighter shirt, so your outfit's more responsive to the weather," Hannibal pointed out. "It's also slightly more dressy." He turned to their helper. "Do you think you could find us some alternatives?"

Once the man had left, he added, "A jacket allows you to hide a weapon under it, should you so choose. And some have pockets that allow for more bulk than the trousers will, for carrying a wallet or...other things."

Kanan was already listing off a few 'other things' in the back of his head as he considered the blazer in that light. And then he nodded faintly. Okay. Maybe he'd have some need to look more dressy while also concealing weapons under there.

It was basically a miracle he left his blaster at home for these trips as it was, after all.

"My long coat has all of that," he noted, "it just isn't terribly dressy."

"It's also somewhat more conspicuous, particularly in summer," Hannibal pointed out.

The shop employee came back with a cargo jacket and a tailored-looking leather one, holding them up for Kanan to see.

"Yeah, but so far as I'm aware, nobody around here is trying to-- Oh, nice."

He was absolutely not going to talk about the Empire in front of the shop employee, no. He was, however, going to lean in for a better look at that leather jacket. The cargo jacket was good too, but...

Hannibal chuckled. Kanan might insist he didn't care about fashion, but he clearly had his preferences. He left Kanan to the jackets, and found a button-up shirt in a color that would match his eyes and complement his skin tones. Then another in a muted plaid that would be suitable for more casual times, and a t-shirt in an abstract print.
