Hands On History of the American Civil War, Monday, Period 2

Hey, both teachers were here this week for class! And it wasn't even a movie day. Be proud of them, students. Goody and Nathan were almost approaching 'functional human' status, now. Maybe someday.

They lived in perpetual hope.

"My apologies for missing last week," Nathan said, nodding to the class at large. "I was... detained, I suppose is the proper word, by a group of gremlins having a slumber party in my living room." And there was no way in hell he was going out a window just to get to class. "I hope whatever film Mr. Robicheaux chose to show you was educational."

Or at least entertaining. That was about the best they could hope for in this day and age.

"This week," he continued, "we're going to pick up where we left off two weeks ago, with the surrender of Lee's army in Northern Virginia, at Appomattox."

"I figured out those movies," Goody said with all the pride a man could muster when discussing movies. But he was quick to move on from it at least. "Now, Lee's army had been hoping to hook up with Johnston's Army of Tennessee after the fall of Richmond but the Confederate forces were harried by the yankee cavalry, delaying them from their goal."

Damned cavalry.

Well, Nathan might or might not be smiling just the tiniest bit, there.

Because cavalry.

"Not that we were the only thing standing in his way," Nathan noted. "He lost a day's marching time trying to get supplies after finding no provisions at Amelia. As we've mentioned before, armies don't run on air." A pause. "The delay gave Sheridan and his men a head start, arriving at Appomattox before Lee and capturing Lee's supplies and just generally getting in the way."

Obstructing his path, getting in the way. Eh. Same difference.

"There they skirmished here and there," Goody said solemnly. "Longstreet coming up to support Lee, but by then it was far past a losing battle. When Grant sent a message requesting surrender, it was accepted."

Because Grant certainly wasn't like any of the other Union generals Lee had faced. The man was not one to hold back from victory.

"The terms of the surrender," Nathan noted, "were presented to Lee by Grant himself, and included a clause about rolls of the officers and men in the Army of Northern Virginia made in duplicate, to be given to an officer designated by Grant, and to any officer or officers that Lee designated. Soldiers weren't to take up arms against the Government of the United States, and all arms, artillery, and public property was to be handed over to one of Grant's designated officers. Side-arms and private horses and baggage were to be left to their respective owners, who were allowed to return home in peace."

"Parole," Goody added dryly. "The most common form of accepting surrender. As holding an entire opposing army captive wasn't exactly plausible. It did happen, but… let's just say the less said on those camps, the better."

He might have grimaced a little at the thought.

"We'll pass around the terms granted to the Confederacy's last leader if ya'll would like to see it. Maybe let us know what you think of them."

"It should be noted," Nathan added, "that this wasn't entirely the end of the war. There were a few more small battles even after General Lee's surrender. But we'll get to the aftermath of all of this another time. This week, share your thoughts on Grant's terms. Maybe speculate on what you think happened next, if you aren't in a position to already know." He smiled wryly. "I have to admit, I'm curious about your thoughts."

"It seems fair enough," Jalian said. "Unless there are things I don't understand about them." Which seemed to happen a lot.

Why do I keep reading class when it goes up, and then forgetting to ping in?
