Honesty

Today we're going to play a game. I'll give you the why behind it tomorrow. This is called three truths and a lie. Please think of threee personal facts, they can be simple our outrageous, and one lie that sounds plausible. Tell us and we'll try to guess based on what we know about you so far this term. It's very simple. three truths and a lie, and then guess. Have fun today gang...I'm playing too. Go.

401--5th period

You all heard this last term, but now you've grown so we're going to revisit deconstructionism and post-structuralism. Theory behind speech comm is backed by science: psychology, sociology, medicine, and behavioralism. Once again I only have one question for discussion today...and you can bet your boots we're going to discuss the heck out of it.

In a sender/message/receiver paradigm...who benefits?

Maia's 3 truths and a lie.

I was born in 1938.

I have a crush on one of my teachers, not Ms. Sidle by the way.

My biggest fear is spiders.

I died once.

Since Maia is her only student left, she sits casually on top of the table and thinks. "Well, I'm pretty sure 1938 is true."

"It is." She smiled at her and waited for her to guess the others.

"I think you died...I think you told me that once."

Maia smiled "That one is the lie. I never died, I came close once though." Maia grinned again she liked this game.

Shep's 3 truths and a lie.

CJ's 3 truths and a lie.

OK, Um...

I fell in a pool in front of my boss.

I own more shoes than Imelda Marcos.

I enjoy fly fishing.

I speak four languages and am learning a fifth.

"I think that you don't enjoy fly fishing?" Maia said curiously.

"Nope, that's true. It's something I do with my dad."

Maia giggled picturing C.J. out in the water in hipwaders. "Um...I think you don't have a lot of shoes." Maia said with a nod.

"Well, I do have a lot of shoes, but not more than Imelda." she nods and smiles. "So You have a crush, huh?"

Maia blushed furiously at C.J.'s words and nodded. "I do. I know it isn't allowed anymore, teachers with students but...well there isn't anything wrong with a crush is there?" She asked looked up at C.J. finally.

With a slight shrug, she looks down...missing Maia's look entirely, "You can't help how you feel sometimes. But you can control how you act. It sucks, but that's the way it is."

Maia nodded and leaned back in her chair, "I can indeed and I plan on being very much just myself." She shrugged "So" Maia leaned back further leaning the chair against the wall now, "How is it living back in the dorms?"

"It's actually kind of nice. It's quiet, and yet really social if I want it to be. First floor lobby isn't hopping like upstairs, but the teachers and other students come and watch tv and eat and chat. It's nice."

Maia smiled at her "I'll have to come watch T.V. with you sometime then." She said happily dropping her chair back down level. "Maybe even chat with you."

"Any time you want to. And if I'm not out there, knock on my door. If I'm around that would be a great way to spend an evening."

Maia smiled and nodded "I'll have to do that sometime."

Derrida and Foucault...how can you not love them?

"The person that benefits is the one that has something to gain," Allie said. "So it depends on what the message is and what the ramifications of the message are for the involved parties."

"What if neither of them have something to gain? What if the sender's passing on a message that has nothing to do with them, and the receiver gains nothing?"

"Is that ever the case, E?"

"If someone is passing on a message that the receiver already knows," Elizabeth suggested.

"Why doesn't the receiver stop the sender midmessage then?"

"Because if it's not their message that they're sending, they feel obligated to do as they said they would do and pass it on."

"Ooh, tell me more about obligation."

"Well, until they've got the whole message, the receiver might not know they weren't getting any new information."

"Good point, Lindsey. What are the conversational implacature cues the receiver might take to understand when the end of the message is, and there is no new information?"
