How To Shoot Straight, Monday

"Your trip is next week," Atton said. "So I think this is as good a time as any to end the block on handguns."

They were in the gun range again. He was waving at... guns, yes.

"I want you guys to team up," he said. "One of you has to get the gun, go through all of the safety measures we've talked about, and score at least twenty-five points on the moving targets at the back of the range. The other one takes notes about their point score and whether they're doing everything correctly. Yes, you're allowed to correct each other, and if the other person does it right the second time, they pass. If the other person then behaves like a stubborn idiot and does it wrong anyway, they lose points."

He clapped his hands.

The little round targets at the back of the range - some marked '1 point', some '5 points', and occasionally, one '10 points' - started moving from side to side.

"When you're done, swap places. Okay, go."

And, the weirdest thing to Alluka was that... was that she noticed that, about Ringo's shooting.

She nibbled on her lower lip as she made notes, but she just watched as Ringo shot, not wanting to distract her.

Ringo finished shooting and let out a little sigh of relief. Glad to be done with it. She was careful to follow all the rules she'd learned in class about making sure the weapon was safe to put down, but then she did so before glancing over at Alluka with a sort of sad smile.

"How'd I do?" Not like she couldn't have kept track herself, and would have with most activities, but the whole gun thing was distracting enough that she hadn't really done so.

"Um, um, you didn't do bad," Alluka said, reading off the score. It was pretty... in the middle? "But... but you don't like shooting, do you?"

"Um." Ringo wrinkled her nose.

"Not really?" She shrugged uncomfortably. "Guns are, you know, not really very common back home? And I don't like, I don't know, I guess I don't like how dangerous they are?"

She didn't want to be able to kill people, really.

Alluka didn't actually have an opinion on killing people.

"That's okay," she said, since it had to be. It was okay to think different things, right? "Just... just that I think if you'd been happier and, and not so tense you'd have done better."

"Really?" she asked, looking down at her hand thoughtfully.

"I guess my mood matters for AirTrek, so it could matter for this, too."

Which was kind of an awkward thought.

"I think it might not make you better," Alluka said, not really sure what she wanted to say. "But being more comfortable would help see what you really need to work on, maybe?"

Ringo considered that for a moment.

"I think you might be right," she decided. "But, um, I don't really know how to be more comfortable so, well, maybe I'm just sort of stuck where I am."

"I don't know either," Alluka admitted. "Maybe, maybe you could practice with water guns? Those aren't... hurting people, right?"

"Well, that's true." Ringo grinned. "Actually, water guns are kinda cool."

Then she looked thoughtful again. "Though they're not very much like real guns, if you think about it?"

Still, it might be worth trying.

"It might help anyway," Alluka said, wanting to be supportive. "You're not bad already!"

"Aww. Thanks." Ringo ducked her head. Because even when it was with something she wasn't a huge fan of, it was nice to receive a compliment.
