Urban Survival - The Uglier Side of City Living, Wednesday, Period 2
Class today was meeting... on the Causeway. Sparkle had declared it would be so, and lo, Portalocity was even carrying through on this one with a direct portal to a select location in Baltimore, because it wasn't like Sparkle could drive, okay? Students were also told to dress comfortably, and not wear any open-toed shoes or heels for the day.
"So, this week we're going to get into how to actually see that your basic physical needs are met, if you ever find yourself homeless in a city somewhere," he shared. "I was going to have this just be a lecture class, but you know what? Everything is fucking horrible, so today I'm going to give you all first-hand exposure to one option while also doing some fucking good in the world. Today, we're going to volunteer at the Maryland Food Bank. I'll get into more lecturing about how to get food next week."
He waved them through the portal, and the class stepped out into an alleyway, mostly so as to not spook the locals. He kept talking as he walked around the building.
"A lot of you guys won't have something like a food bank as an option," he noted, as he walked. "But, at least for realities like this one, there are these places where people, like, donate food. It's great. Especially for the people who wouldn't be eating otherwise. They ask for money and non-perishable food items like canned goods and dry noodles, people give it out of the goodness of their hearts, and then they'll stock all this stuff up for people who are starving their asses off to come by and get it. The qualifications of getting this food vary from place to place, but what they really want to be sure of is that this stuff is going to the people who need it the most."
He held open the door for the students to step inside, paused for a moment to talk to somebody, and then they were directed back to the warehouse. They were expected, of course. You had to make arrangements in advance to volunteer for this stuff, and Sparkle had been sure to. Heck, he'd even warned them that some of his students might look a little... unique. It was a cultural thing. Please don't stare, it's rude.
"Normally they'll make sure we commit to a three hour shift," he noted, "but they agreed to make an exception for our class, especially once I explained what our class is. We'll work our class hour helping them put together food hampers, and if anybody wants to stick around after that, you're welcome to join me for the next two. There'll be transportation-" by which of course he meant a portal, "- back to the island for you guys where we were dropped off if you have to get back for another class."
He gestured around the warehouse as he spoke.
"Unless any of you are over eighteen, you won't be able to work on the conveyor belts repacking donated food," he noted, "so you'll probably mostly be put to work packing food kits, health and beauty kits - because they actually do accept donations for things like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and tampons here, too - and checking expiry dates. If any of you are over eighteen and want to join me at the conveyor belt, just let me know, otherwise the rest is pretty straightforward. One of the people here will show you how it's done."
Welcome to charity work, kids.

Lecture
Dammit, Sparkle wants to make a difference today, so you all get voluntold.
Volunteer work!
You can put together food hampers, which consist of things like meat, potatoes, vegetables, Kraft Dinner, peanut butter, beans, juice, margarine, bread, and milk!
You can put together a health and beauty package, consisting of things like soap, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, tampons and pads, razors for shaving, and the like!
Or you can sort through the donated goods, checking dates on the labels for expired goods.
If you're over eighteen and feeling ambitious, you can join Sparkle at the conveyor belt, re-packaging donated goods instead.
Re: Volunteer work!
Especially when her travelling companion tended to snack on it.
Tip headed straight for the health and beauty packing. She kept an especial eye out on those hair products. "Do you all get many donations for textured hair?"
Re: Volunteer work!
"'M eighteen," she said, "--an' it sounds like they need more people for this."
Re: Volunteer work!
"So, there is some attempt to help people who need it," she observed. "If it's known it's needed and can be done, why not more?"
Re: Volunteer work!
Re: Volunteer work!
They'd established that, really.

Besides, it wasn't like she had much better to do back in Fandom today.
