Don't Be a Hero [Thursday, 2nd Period]

Cara had her class meet her in a normal classroom because she didn't need to use the Danger Shop yet, and she wasn't quite cruel enough to make tham meet outside in this weather. At least, not for the first class.

"So, heroism, it's a really good way to end up dead." Well, Cara, that wasn't at all a blunt way to start things off. "If you're lucky, you'll be the only dead one, if you're unlucky you'll take a lot of people down with you, and they'll probably be people you like. So let's be clear, the name of the class isn't ironic or sarcastic." You were however, very likely to become familiar with Cara's sense of irony and sarcasm.

"However, since we don't live in a world where sensible people trying to avoid trouble actually suceed at that, you are going to have to learn coping skills for when the island decides to be the island, which is where I come in. But that can wait, since one of the many quirks of the island is the first week is always for introductions. So name, class, your first instinct in a fight. Three questions, no wrong answers."

Only stupid ones.

"My name is Lucille Sharpe." She had no intention of becoming a hero. "I am from England in 1889, where women generally aren't expected to become heroes." Which was one of the few things women weren't expected to do that she didn't mind.

"Ada Miller," she said easily, having had a few of Ms. Cara's classes before. "An' depends on th' type of fight. Usually? Run. Get outta th' way so th' people who can fight ain't tripping over me."

Yes, well. Lucille didn't particularly care to make her true instincts public.

"I suppose my own interests are worth fighting for. I prefer to live, though."

"We all die eventually. Isn't heroism about dying for someone else?"

Would she die for Thomas? She had frequently defended him, after all.

"I know what I'm doing," Ada replied cheerfully. "I'm putting as much space b'tween me an' whatever wants to eat me as possible, that's what 'm doing! If'n I get enough space between it an' me, then I can re-evaluate, but m' priority is not causing or becoming immediate collateral damage."

"I'm not questioning your view. But how else would you make someone behave that way without appealing to something larger than themselves?"

Lucille was just pleased this conversation was now less about her personally.

"I am Hyacinthe," he said, giving Cara a polite bow. "And my first instinct in to step back and look. If it's a fight I can avoid or can't win, I run. If it's neither, I try too see the fastest way to end it. Nothing good comes from dragging out a fight for as long as it will go."

Hya was too smart to be a hero. Heroes were for the nobility, who could afford fine arms, fine armor, fine training, and fine doctors.

Ada was resisting the urge to make a joke about Hyacinthe (sensibly) preferring to be a lover not a fighter, but she managed. Barely.

She was going to give him grin, because he really was too smart to be a hero. Which was how Ada tended to like her friends.

They tended towards a longer life-span, one heard.

He winked at her right back, comfortable in how he viewed the world. He was no coward, but he was no idiot either. And only idiots went out looking for fights. There were so many better ways to occupy one's time and energies, after all.

"I'm Rhys." And he was useless in a fight. Useless. "And, uh, avoid getting into the fight? I mean. Unless it's a finger-gun fight. I'm pretty goof at those."

And the finance department was super intense about them.

Don't be too quick to judge there, Cara. There are still plenty of stupid things Hyacinthe would do. Most of them just didn't resolve around fighting.

"I'm not wealthy enough to be a hero," he said with a shrug.
