US Government - March 17 - Period 4

"Afternoon dudes!" Ignore the fact that it may actually be morning. There is no such thing as morning to Ted anymore. "My most esteemed housemate dude, Professor Lyman, isn't back yet, so I'm taking the class today. Today we're talking about this Civil War thing. The Civil War was when Abe-dude made a big speech and a decision and then the north state dudes and the south state dudes fought over, like, slaves and stuff.

The south dudes were all 'Whoa, slaves' and Abe was all like 'Dude, no way' and the south dudes were all 'make me' and Abe was all 'Okay then, bogus dudes!' and he was most righteous. So anyway, the north dudes, the Union, fought in blue. The south dudes, the Confederates, fought in gray. This was so they wouldn't get confused about who was on whose side. They fought for, like, ages and then the north Union Yankee dudes (not to be confused with the north New York Yankees baseball dudes) beat the south Confederate dudes and I totally stole General Lee's horse."

"Uh, anyway, the American Civil War is kinda a good example of how government goes wrong. There was other not-slavery stuff going on, like who gets what power and, uh, money and the south dudes not wanting Abe to build strip malls in the south.

So...the question here," he looked at his notes, which he had totally disregarded before now. "Asks if you were in Abe's shoes, faced with a country who didn't want to do all the same thing and was splitting up, and something was going on that you thought was totally bogus, and you were President, would you do what Abe did? Or would you do something different?"

Kawalsky signed in. He hadn't been in Wednesday's class because he hadn't been ready to face Liz. Now he had very little choice in the matter.

Sam signed in and absolutely, positively didn't look around for Lee. Really.

"Probably what Lincoln did," Kawalsky answered, because he couldn't think of anything he would have done differently. If he could have avoided all of the deaths, he would have, but he wasn't thinking that hard today.

"I think he did the only thing he could do," Angela nodded. "If he'd tried to compromise to keep the South in the union, slavery would have lasted a lot longer."

Marty jabbed a thumb in Kawalsky's and then in Angela's direction.

"What they said."

"He wanted to keep the country as one, and everything they've already said; he did what he thought was best and thought it was a decision that was best for the people."

"Lincolm made a hard choice and I probably would've made the same one," John says. "He attempted to give rights to everyone because he thought it was the right and moral thing to do."

"I would have done the same thing, but I wouldn't have gone to Ford's Theatre. Booth was a hack."

"I'm with everyone else. Lincoln did what he absolutely had to do. There was clearly no further way of negotiating with the Confederates at that point except conceeding pretty much everything. At that point, I don't think anything else could have been done."

"I agree with the rest of the class," Elizabeth said softly. "I'd have tried to avoid going to war for as long as possible, but the negotiations were impossible."
