Creature Languages, 3/16, Period 3

Dream stands before class in his robes, a raven perched on his shoulder. There is a stack of vocabulary handouts on the table in the front of the room.

"This is Matthew. He will be teaching you today," Dream says, then steps aside.

Matthew takes flight, circling over the heads of the students, before perching back on the lectern and opening his beak. He speaks in English.

"Hey. I'm Matthew, like the boss said. I used to be a man, I smashed up my car, now I'm a raven. It happens."

And if birds could shrug, that's what he would be doing. "Anyhow. It's pretty cool. I'm even used to eating rats now, and our culture's pretty neat, if I do say so myself."

"I hate this lecturing thing. Study your vocabulary sheets and then ask me a question. Raven's better, but if you have to speak in English, go ahead."

With that, Matthew snaps his beak shut and watches the class expectantly.

Molly examined him for a moment as she thought about it. "Hmmm, probably a monkey of some kind. You have enough energy and you're also really curious."

Blair's eyes widened. "No! Not a monkey! They're all..." He shuddered.

Molly blinked and frowned a little. "What's wrong with monkeys?"

Blair looked around carefully and leaned over to whisper. "They know things. They're always watching and I think they might attack and take over the world someday. They knoooooooow things." He shuddered again and sunk down low in his seat.

Molly just looked at him in confusion. "What type of animal would you want to be then?"

"Maybe a dog. Because I really want to communicate with Sean. Or a bird so I can fly, although maybe not because I'm not a big fan of heights. Maybe a fish? Or a antelope? Or a buffalo?! Wouldn't that be awesome?" Blair bounced happily and started making a list.

"Being a bird might be fun for a while. Flying is fun," Molly granted. "I don't really know about anything else though. I've never really thought about it before."

Blair nodded and asked absently. "I wonder if there's a way to find out how to change into an animal. Maybe a book in the library or something?"

Molly chuckled. "You could always annoy Professor Skeeter. She'd turn you into an animal, no problem. You wouldn't get to choose though."

"Annoy a professor? I think that's almost scarier than becoming a monkey! I'm just glad Dr. Jackson doesn't seem upset with me, I don't want to push my luck with another teacher. "

Molly shrugged. "That is the only way I know for sure to get turned into an animal. You could ask Zero how she got turned into a cat the first time."

"I should do that! And that means I could go to the library which means..." Blair paused and bounced. "Research!"

Molly gave Blair an unsure look. Research didn't sound like that much fun.
