"Hey, guys!" Brian greeted his students. If he looked kind of haggard, that was because he had spent a lot of last night trying to clean all the cat hair from what was apparently his apartment now, only to give up and fall asleep on the bare mattress (because of course he didn't have sheets for the bed) and be woken by the cat Wash had apparently left behind, presumably to torment Brian, walking across his face at 2 AM. He'd had to feed it the can of tuna he found in the back of one of the cabinets to get it to shut up and let him go back to sleep. So he guessed he had a cat now. He was thinking of calling it Vince; it was almost as annoying. "First off, really sorry about last week. Something...something came up. But I'm here now, so let's get started, yeah? In case you're wondering why I'm qualified to teach this class: I used to be a cop out in LA, but that, uh, that didn't work out. And now I teach here!" Yeah, he was leaving a lot out of this scintillating tale. "I bet you thought you were done with introductions, but spoiler alert, you're not: gimme your name, where you're from, and an interaction you've had with law enforcement in the past. If you've managed to avoid that so far, tell me something about law enforcement in your universe--those of you who have encountered the law can tell me about how things work in your universe, too, if you want."

"Oh, and I could use a TA because, uh, as you can tell my schedule can be a little messed up, so if anyone wants to volunteer, please see me after class."

"I'm Mara Jade," Mara said with her ~~inexplicably British~~ Coruscanti accent. "I'm from Imperial Center, and I've had interactions with the Storm Troopers. Like the ones at the police station here. They were very sweet and gave me excellent directions when I was lost."

"Ada Miller," she said warily, wondering why the hell Chester had signed her up for this class. "Not from anywhere in particular, an' can't say as I've had any interactions with law enforcement b'fore."

Social Services, sure. Cops harassing the carnival and using their badges to try and get under the skirts of some of the cousins, totally. But Ada herself had so far managed to slip under their radar.

"Isabela, and I've never been in any trouble with the law."

Ahahahahahaha ha.

"Well, I've been in a cell before," Steven mused. "Oh, and I'm forgetting myself! I'm Steven Universe." He punctuated that with a little laugh. "But the cell was on a spaceship from a government of alien Gems that were trying to destroy the Earth, so I don't know if we'd really count them as police."

He thought that over for a second. "Nah, not police."

"I'm Cosette," said the girl who also had no idea how she'd ended up in this class, "I'm from Paris, but I don't believe I've ever had any encounters with the police back home."

That she knew of. Sure, there had been that whole incident she barely remembered, where she and her father had moved out of their little apartment in the middle of the night and he'd hauled her over a wall into the convent using a rope he stole out of a street lamp, but she'd been so cold she hadn't exactly been paying attention to anything other than his instructions, and how was she supposed to know this was all to escape from a police officer anyway? It wasn't like he ever told her.

"I am Hyacinthe and 'twas all very typical," Hyacinthe said with a shrug. "I've been yelled at and chased and one time I was caught by the end of the lash, but 'twas only the once. I don't know who was more surprised by it, him or I, but the mark faded by the end of the following fortnight and I believe he always chased me extra-slowly after that, just in case. Oh, and I am from the City of Elua, in Terre D'Ange. 'Tis France, in your world."

"I'm Kalin Neya," she said. "I'm from Elantra and I am a Hawk - or I will be as soon as I'm old enough. That's kind of like your police here."

Who needs a large coffee and a cleaning service.

Me, last Thursday night: "I guess I should get started on Brian's class...wait. Wait. Shit." Sigh.
