Shop, Tuesday, period 3

Class met in the Danger Shop, currently programmed to resemble a large, warehouse looking room, full of various standing power tools, work stations with giant tool boxes, and a very large wall of safety gear. Eliot stood at the front, his hair pulled back into a ponytail, with a bandana to make sure none of it escaped and dangled into his face. He had a pair of plastic safety goggles propped on his head, and a pair of leather work gloves sticking out of his pocket.

"Welcome to Shop class," he greeted. "We're hopefully gonna get it all in this semester: wood shop, metal shop, and auto shop. Basically, if it's somethin' you're lookin' to build that ain't a computer, I'll do my best to make sure you get the chance." He shrugged. "If it is a computer, make it a computer powered robot or somethin'. We wanna run macro here, not micro.

"It's the first day, so that means introductions. And it's Tuesday, so y'all shouldn't be too sick of 'em, just yet. I'm Eliot Spencer, your teacher. You can call me Eliot or Mr. Spencer, dependin' on what you're comfortable with. I wanna know your names, why you're takin' this class, and one thing you're interested in trying to make this semester." He pointed to one of the students. "You. Get us started."

Once introductions were dispensed with, Eliot walked over to the wall'o'safety gear. "This is the Danger Shop. Everything you're lookin' at here is a hologram, but one you can interact with. There's safety protocols in place to keep you from cuttin' your fingers off, but it also apparently all works well enough that you can make somethin' out of real wood and carry it out of here. I don't know how that works and frankly I ain't gonna trust it, so today, before we start workin' with things that can cut you, burn you, or otherwise make you cry, we're gonna cover the safety rules [ooc: the first 1.5 pages. Obv the school specific info at the link does not apply]. These are not optional. I see anyone trying to use a saw without a proper pair of safety goggles at the very least, I will make your life a living hell for the rest of the class."

Mostly by making you sweep up sawdust. He would make the Danger Shop manifest sawdust for you if he had to.

"The other thing you'll need to know before we can get started is how to plan. Improvisation is really great, and not just in the theater, but a machine shop is not the place for it. So for the rest of class today, we're gonna practice some technical drawing. The idea is to get a visual of all the sides of the 3D object you're creating. It's a lot easier to mess up and erase a line in pencil than it is to try to glue a chunk of wood back together if you cut it in the wrong place. So figure out what that piece of wood, or that chunk of metal, or that set of gears is going to do before you go start cutting or shaping or screwing things together.

"I'm gonna give you specific assignments for the rest of the semester, but with today's sketching, it's a free for all. Draw plans for a birdhouse, or a spice rack, or a bicycle, or a spaceship if you want. Doesn't matter if you think you can eventually build it or not at this point, I just want you to get the ideas flowing and get a feel for how a technical drawing works. You got any questions, let me know." He pulled a stack of paper and a cup of sharpened pencils out of one of the tool boxes and set them down on the central work table with a *thunk*. "Now get to it."

Tali wasn't surprised it could have been longer, honestly. She'd heard lectures from her father in largely the same tone (except those tended to be more about how important it was for her to excel because of her duty to the quarian people) and those could go on for quite a long time.

She didn't vaguely resent this lecture though, at least, so there was that!

"I'm Dante," Dante said, shrugging slightly. "Guess I'm here because it looked not boring. And I'd like to figure out my bike some more."

He sagged further back in his seat.

"That's it."

Mr. Spencer was just as charming as he'd been last semester. Hyacinthe was amused.

"I am Hyacinthe," he said. "And I am here because I am good with my hands."

...That might have sounded like less innuendo-y, except, well, look at the roster.

"This seemed like a class where I'd get to build something. I find I miss it. I've no idea what I should make, though. Usually I repair things for coin, rather than making aught new."

"I, I'm Alluka!" she chirped, when it was her turn, though she wilted slightly as she said, "and I'm here because making things sounded interesting and useful and I... don't really know how to make anything. Or what I'd make."

She had a plushie flower in the pocket of her skirt but she wasn't holding a toy, for once, since none of them had wanted to come to what had sounded like a lot of work.

"I am Thorin," he said, forgoing the traditional greeting for this. "I did not choose my classes, but I believe this will be of interest for me. I... already have middling skills at smithing."

Which meant he was pretty good. Because Dwarves, yo.

"I'm Daphne Blake and I'm in this class because I like crafting things and seeing how things work or are put together so I can use that information to save my friends when we're on a case and someone is sabotaging us."

"Ada Miller, an' I've always liked takin' things apart an' puttin' 'em back t'gether," she said with a shrug. "Mostly engines or mechanical things, but I like anything I can fiddle with."

"I'm Tali." She waved a three-fingered hand jauntily at the class at large. "I'm here because I'm used to building things, and I like working with my hands, but this is an entirely different kind of technology than I'm used to, and I thought that'd be an interesting experience. So I'm not sure what I want to make yet -- I might get a better idea of it once I get a feel for the tools we'll be using."

"I'm Blue Sargent and I thought this class sounded practical." Blue was very practical. And fanciful! Like a platypus.

Also, she'd wanted to keep an eye on her roommate to make sure he didn't bedazzle all their furniture or something.

"So, I don't know, something useful?"

"My name is Kira, and I took this class because I like knowing how things work," she said. "I would love to be able to make something for a car. Even if I can only fix something, it would be better than having to rely solely on mechanics, especially ones who like to lie to people they think don't know anything about cars."

Technical drawing

The only limit today is your imagination! The only limits in the coming weeks will be the laws of physics and your actual developing skill at 3D crafting and materials manipulation

Since Jalian had told Ringo she'd show her how to make a probe, it seemed appropriate to try and work on a drawing of that. Technical drawings really weren't Jalian's strong point, but she was doing her best.

Her page was blank and that made her feel sort of weird, since other people knew what to draw, so Alluka doodled a flower on the corner of her page, just so it wasn't so... empty.

And then she looked around a bit helplessly.

Where was she supposed to start?

Thorin had what might have been an intricately designed building already half finished in almost no time at all.

And a tiny disclaimer in Khuzdul labeling it as 'not to scale'. It was important.

Daphne started making a very detailed drawing of what appeared to be a type of trebuchet. One had come in handy over the summer with the gang.

I live in a studio apartment in a tower with zero room to actually set up and work with even handheld power tools. BUT GODDAMN IF I DON'T OWN MY OWN JIGSAW ANYWAY.
