Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Ringo laughed brightly. "Oh, come on. You have to start somewhere, right?" She grinned. "Besides, if you eat too much and get full, you can always sneak some leftovers back to the dorms to try later."

She reached out and grabbed a brownie from the table, which she plopped right onto Shiemi's plate.

Shiemi stared at the brownie like she had no idea how it had gotten there. "You... you can do that?"

"Sure!" Not that Ringo had any idea if there were any rules that she might be breaking. But no one had yelled at her at any previous picnic, so she figured there wasn't a problem.

"After all, you don't want there to be any leftovers that go to waste, right?"

"No," she agreed and tentatively reached out for a very cute mini-cupcake to add to the brownie. "Is there always this much food?"

...

"It is free, right?" she leaned in to whisper. The food at the True Cross Academy back home was very expensive, she'd been told by Rin and the other ExWires, and Shiemi's mother was only sending her a monthly allowance...

Ringo laughed. "Not always this much, no." She shook her head, her pigtails swaying. "It's kind of a special occasion, since there are so many new people to welcome to the island, you know?"

"And, yeah, totally free. So have as much as you want. I mean, there are also restaurants and stuff if you'd rather go buy something on your own."

"Ah no. I just wondered; there's so much and... This is perfectly fine." Shiemi now had a little more courage; it helped that this girl reminded her a little of Shura-sensei back home. She smiled shyly up at the other girl. "This is my first time at a real school. I don't know how things work."

"We were all new here at one point or another," Ringo pointed out gently. "So don't worry about it." She cocked her head. "Did you get assigned a big sibling?"

Shiemi's eyes lit up. "I did! Her name is Blue Sargent! Like the Juniper! She's really nice."

Ah!

"My name is Moriya... I mean Shiemi. Nice to meet you!" She tried to shift her plate so she could stick out a hand.

Ringo balanced her own much-more-loaded plate on one hand to grasp Shiemi's. "I'm Ringo Noyamano."

She looked the girl up and down for a second, considering her clothes and that slip with the name. "Nice to meet you."

Was there something odd about a kimono and geta?

"Hmm?" Shiemi blinked at Ringo's look.

Ringo smiled slightly, and ventured a guess.

"Konichiwa," she said, switching to Japanese. "Welcome to Fandom."

"..."

"!!!"

"K--konichiwa, Noyamano-sempai!" Shiemi bowed (and spilled her plate) in excitement. Someone else from Japan! "Please look after your junior!"

"You got it!" Ringo giggled. "As your senpai, my first order is to get some food. We wouldn't want you to faint from hunger."

Shiemi laughed, blushing slightly as she realized she'd spilled her food. "Hai, sempai." She took a step backwards and reached for a replacement brownie.

"Better get two," she advised teasingly. "Just in case."

And then it hit her, and her smile faltered. Senpai. She hadn't said or heard the word since Kathy had died.

She forced her smile back before Shiemi noticed. Ringo had a lot to live up to, but she would do her best!

She may have missed it this time, but next time... no. She'd miss it then, too. Shiemi was a little on the oblivious side.

"Eh? Two?" Shiemi was fairly sure she wasn't going to be able to eat two. "But I wanted one of the cute little cupcakes, too!"

"Well, get one of those, too!" Obviously.

Ringo grinned. "You can always save the second brownie for later, you know."

"Ah! You said that! I should get two extra ones so that I can share with Margaery!"

"Oh, you know Margaery?" Ringo lit up a bit at that.

"She's my roommate! I met her today," Shiemi gaped. "You know her? She said this is her first time here, too."

Ringo beamed. "She's my new little sister, actually. So you two have to watch out for each other."

"I promise!" Shiemi clenched her fist in determination.

"I'm sure you'll do a great job," Ringo laughed.
