So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

Ringo frowned. "Um, didn't they have phones back then?" Not a ton of cell phones, Ringo. And no smart phones.

"Phones, yeah," Peter answered. "Mini computers in your pocket, no. Cell phones were still sort of rare, and a whole lot bigger. I didn't even recognize one the first time someone showed it to me."

Ringo laughed at that. "Really?" She shook her head. "Did it take you long to get used to them?" She couldn't really imagine not having access to the internet whenever she needed it.

"I still am, a bit," Peter confessed. "But I'm a quick learner."

Another laugh. "That's probably pretty useful. Especially around here." The island really gave you plenty of opportunities to learn new things, too.

"So I hear," Peter said. "So far I've just had to learn how to run a flower shop."

"Somehow I don't think the island'll leave it at that for too long." It never seemed to let people get bored.

"We'll see," Peter said. "I'm trying to take it as it comes."

"That's a good philosophy in life, I think."

She said with all the wisdom of her 16 years.

Peter was nice enough not to laugh at that, with his hundred-times-more years. "For some things, yeah. I like planning, but some things you can't plan for."

"Lots of times." See how wise she was?

"Have you had that happen a lot?" Peter asked.

"Unplanned for things?" Ringo considered that, then shrugged. "I guess so? I mean, a lot of it's good surprises, you know? Like, tons of people I've met here that I never would have expected."

A few less good surprises, of course. Kathy's death still loomed large for her.

"Friends are always good," Peter said. "Even unexpected ones."

Ringo nodded. "They're kinda the best surprises."

Peter smiled. "Well, it's nice to make friends with you, Ringo."

She beamed back up at him. "And you, Peter!"
