"Last week you all got to learn about disease prevention and condoms," John said once it looked like everyone had assembled. "This week? Additional types of birth control for humaniods with male-female reproduction, because I'm pretty sure none of you want to be parents in nine months, or whatever the gestational period for your people happens to be."
“And there are a lot of choices,” Didi added, as she passed a pamphlet describing said choices to one of the students. “The birth control pill is the one you might hear the most about, but there are also hormonal rings and shots, barrier methods like diaphragms, and internal methods like the IUD. That handout also talks about fertility awareness, which is very cool but involves a lot of tracking your menstrual cycle and is probably better for people in a monogamous relationship who could handle an unplanned pregnancy. The bad news is that none of those things provide any protection against STDs. Only condoms do that.”
“The other bad news is that those are all female methods. There isn’t such a thing as male birth control besides the condom in most universes right now, though there’s a lot of research going on. I hope someday soon they’ll work it out.”
"You and me both, sunshine," John sighed, making a face. "Short of a bloke getting permanently snipped -- that's slang for havin' your interior plumbing short-circuited to prevent any baby-accidents -- we don't have any methods of controlling our reproductive potential besides condoms or abstinence." Ugh, abstinence.
"And no, pulling out does not count. At all. In any way, shape, or form. It's not birth control, it's fucking Russian Roulette with a kid at the end."
“It’s maybe a little better than nothing,” Didi concurred. “But ‘better than nothing’ isn’t the odds you want to stake something this important on.”
"You can get access to most any of these from the staff at the clinic after a quick visit," John said helpfully. "It's also something you should discuss with someone before you tumble in to bed. You don't want to get going and realize no one has a condom or is on any sort of birth control. That way lies nerve-wracking trips to the chemist to get the 24 hour pill, because you've got hormones and adrenaline hollering in your ear to 'screw it,' and that way lies terrible decision-making skills."
What? It was true!
"And if you think asking the person you're about to pounce if they're protected is just too dead embarrassing and you can't do it, well, you probably need to think about if you should be getting naked with them in the first place."
“You have such a way with words,” Didi told John dryly, then turned to the class. “Anyhow, we aren’t going to make you do any arts and crafts this week. But we have until the end of class, and if you have any questions about birth control -- or any comments that you want to share with the rest of us -- the floor is open. So, what’s on your minds?”
"I can't help having the soul of a poet." Constantine, stop being a troll. "--But try to keep the language PG-13, yeah? We got impressionable squirrels listening in."
