How to Be Awesome, Wednesday, 3rd Period

The Danger Shop looked like a movie theater today. Jackson was parked at one end of the back row of seats.

"Today we're gonna look at things not being awesome," he drawled. "Like this movie. Which you're gonna watch now. So sit your asses down."

Yeah, it was a movie day. Look, the island had smelled funny since Jackson had shown up this morning. As the kids filed in it became extra obvious that there was no point to having a proper class, which was good, because the weird smells were throwing Jackson off anyway.

So the movie began.

"Yeah," he said softly. "Memory loss. That's scary." He was lucky not to count that on his family's list of health problems. "The magic or whatever in this town is vicious."

Anyway. As for Lucille, he attempted a little shrug with his wings. "She let me lecture her on gender theory. That, I gotta give her credit for."

Seriously, not everyone could put up with his speeches.

The words man, you should've met Kathy were almost out of Dante's mouth before he managed to bit them back; the end result was that he didn't comment on that last part at all.

"So yeah, for some people it's fucked up," he said, pushing on ahead. "Reminds her of bad stuff. The whole thing when it's happening's not so bad. You don't know shit anyway."

"Yeah, yeah," he agreed. "Kind of makes this pony thing seem dumb and petty by comparison, but I guess you can't really get into ranking the various traumas this place throws at us."

"Nah, you just take it one thing at a time," Dante said. He flared his wings out. "This shit is just annoying."

"Yeah." Having magic mess around with his body wasn't as bad as having magic mess with his head, he guessed. "How've you been doing otherwise?"

"I'm good," Dante said easily.

Of course, between all the meltdowns and the weird weekend shit and so on, he hadn't actually had a lot of time to himself (or to other people) since the last time he saw Roscoe, but-- eh. Everything was good right now. "You? Have a good time at home?"

"Eh." He hadn't, but it was in his nature to be flip about it even as he shared all the details. "Visiting a prison is about as creepy as you'd think. Got to see my mom in Baltimore the other week, though. Even when I was living at home, that was, like, a once-a-month-if-I'm-lucky kinda thing."

He could thank the magic of One Wish, One Day for that one.

"Nice," Dante said easily. Look, talking normal stuff like this made it easier to ignore that he was a fucking pony. "You swing by the prison a lot?"

As long as Roscoe kept his eyes on the movie theater seats in front of them and not Dante's pony exterior, it was totally normal!

"Nah, first time. I didn't really wanna go," he admitted. "My grandpa talked me into it. It's fucked up, you know? And my uncle came with us and was talking about the prison industrial complex and I just wanted to get the fuck out of there."

He was vaguely aware he was oversharing, but his options for venting were pretty limited, and fuck, he was a pony. Talking about the other shit helped.

Dante had a long and storied history of being vastly more comfortable with other people oversharing than himself sharing anything whatsoever, honestly, so he was fine with it.

"Yeah, I can get that," he said. "Prison's got a shitty-ass vibe all around. And it's your dad who got his ass thrown in there, so..."

"Yeah, so I shouldn't have to get dragged there," Roscoe agreed. "I mean, I sound like a brat. But I kinda feel like he and I have a better chance of having a normal relationship after he gets out if I don't have to go see him."

Whatever. He rolled his eyes.

"So you don't have to think of him as a crook?" Dante offered.

He'd been in prison-- well, juvie-- a couple of times. But he had no idea how his experiences compared to white collar shit.

"I guess," Roscoe said. "And like, when I see him there I have to think about how shitty his life is right now and then feel bad for him the next time I want to do some stupid teenage shit that's gonna piss him off."

Clearly, he wasn't thinking about how cushy Marty's white-collar prison was compared to, well, the type of juvie environment Dante would have been in. From the other side of the metal table in the room full of guards, it didn't feel cushy.

Dante wasn't about to bring it up and make the conversation awkward, anyway.

"Not taking a whole lot of pity on him, huh?"

Not that Dante sounded like he thought Roscoe should. Because eh, white collar crime, that was basically fucking people over, right?

"Not really." Because, well, yeah. What he said. "There are a lot of people in jail for crimes they didn't do, you know? At least with him he actually did the thing he's in there for."

"Guess he deserves to suffer for it a little," Dante admitted. "What's the place he's in like? TV says these things have like, fucking golf courses and shit."

"Nah, actually it's not that swanky. There was, like, one garden out back. Sounds like torture."

Heavy sarcasm there, yeah.

Dante snorted. "Of course they get gardens," he said.

Not bitter. Much.

~~And there weren't even dead bodies buried in this particular prison garden! Wait, wrong TV show.~~

"I dunno. Sounds like a good place to do some grazing," Roscoe joked. "But I sure as fuck wouldn't want to work in one."
