How to Win Friends and Influence People, Friday, Period 1

At the front of the classroom this morning, Kanan was standing with his arms crossed over his chest, turning bemused, vaguely amused glances toward Bob. This? This was somehow his life now.

In his hand, he had a book. The odds that he had actually opened that book to look at anything beyond the table of contents were slim.

"So," he said, looking at the class at large. "Welcome to How To Win Friends and Influence People."

As taught by two guys who clearly were already masters of this.

"If you're from modern Earth, you might have seen this book." Bob waved at the book in Kanan's hands. "It's apparently rather popular." He snorted. "It's rubbish. Good table of contents, though, so we'll be going with that."

Kanan opened that book right to said table of contents, and then started to read aloud.

"Twelve things this book will do for you," he said, and then shook his head. "That's right in the class title. Garbage. Clearly we're here to learn how to make friends and influence people."

This was what happened when Kanan just let the school assign him to a class, apparently.

"Which you might or might not be able to do by the time we're finished this semester."

"So," Bob said, "That's what we're going to do for you. Next question is what do you want from this class? More of the winning friends or the influencing people? What sorts of reasons do you need to use it for? Oh," he added, "and who are you? We should probably start there."

"I'm Kanan Jarrus," Kanan said, because they probably should be the ones to kick all this off. "A pilot, first and foremost. Briefly a smuggler. You'd be surprised just what sort of people you meet when you're flying around the galaxy sneaking contraband from planet to planet."

"And I'm Hrothbert of Bainbridge. Or 'Bob' if you prefer," Bob said. "I'm a former necromancer and long-time teacher of magic. Currently a ghost, so don't try handing me anything."

"If you need to do that, I serve multiple purposes as both a teacher and a guy with solid hands," Kanan offered. "That said, we are in the market for a TA, if we have anybody interested in volunteering for the job. Perks mostly include getting to carry things for this guy," he pointed a thumb at Bob, "when I don't feel like it."

Lucille had signed up for this class because of the part where they would learn how to influence people. Winning friends sounded less useful. That might not be the best thing to say in an introduction though.

"My name is Lucille Sharpe. I... grew up in a remote area with little opportunity to neither to win friends nor influence people, and both are useful skills to have when in society."

"They really are," Kanan agreed, giving Lucille a little grin and a nod of his head. "I imagine living away from people leads to a whole unique set of difficulties when it comes to reading them, huh?"

"Welcome, Miss Sharpe." Bob gave her a little bow. "Society's a perfect reason, isn't it? Dreadful people. I hope this class will help."

"Welcome, Ahsoka." Bob nodded to her. "What do you know already, and what are you looking to learn?"

"And the 'making friends' part?"

"Ada Miller, an' other perspectives on how t' influence people are always good," she said simply. "'M good at gettin' what I want, but I c'n always be better."

Bob grinned. "Good to see you again, Ada. We'll see if we can't give you some new pointers."

"Never hurts to improve a little more," Kanan agreed, grinning a little. "Good to have you back, Ada. I'm looking forward to seeing what perspectives you have to bring to our discussions."

"I'm Gratuity," Tip said, and this time left off the stripper name disclaimer. "And -- I'm already signed up for sex-ed and romance writing, so I guess this class is thematic? I think my friend back home signed me up for it. But -- I mean, he's kind of my only close friend, so I guess more about the friend-making would be good to learn."

"You do seem to be following a bit of a theme there," Kanan agreed, amused. "Does your friend pick all of your classes for you, Gratuity?"

Asked the guy who let the school just assign him to teach things.

"Eric Bittle," he introduced himself. "I guess I'm here because, well, I'm not naturally a very assertive person," unless you called in to question Beyonce's talent, but that was beside the point. "So if I can't get away with laying low and going unnoticed," he grinned at Kanan, "I might as well figure out how to charm my way out of a potentially bad situation."

Merrill looked up, smiling faintly. "I'm Merrill," she said, fluttering one hand in a vague greeting, "and I'm here because . . . I'm not really sure where to start doing either of those things, really. Sometimes it just happens, but I'm not really sure how, and it'd be nice to know. That seems like a useful thing to know how to do."

"I'm Kaylin Neya and I'm basically terrible at all of this stuff which is undoubtedly why I got signed up for it." Which she was slightly grumpy about.

"I am Hyacinthe," Hyacinthe said, giving Kanan a merry grin. They'd had such fun last term he was here for more. Weren't you excited for that? "I like being friendly. And 'tis in a Tsingani's best interest to stay on the good side of whatever town he is in, lest he be run out of it on principle."

One's a dead a guy who haunts his own skull. The other is a living guy who spent the last eight years perfecting how not to grow attached to people. This ought to be rich.

Three guesses which teacher was which, too.

Kanan (the not dead guy) was here for a little while after class, idly flipping through the book, mostly out of curiosity. Occasionally, he paused to just kind of raise an eyebrow and go, "Huh."

It was a good guess the ghost was the dead one, yes.

He was just sort of standing around before and after, if anybody needed him. It wasn't as if he had much else to do, really.

Lucille wouldn't offer to be a TA, but if no one else wants to she will accept if they suggest it.
