How to Be Awesome, Wednesday, 3rd Period

Jackson being here today was the end result of a long story. Had to do with his continuing quest for a freaking place in the world, but, anyway. You couldn't tell that by looking at him, when he was at the front of the classroom, his ass parked against the teacher's desk, an expensive pair of sunglasses hanging off the collar of his equally expensive-looking shirt.

"I'm Jackson Whittemore," he said, once it looked like everyone had filed in (or hadn't – wasn't like he cared that much). "I graduated from this hellhole a few years back, and now I'm here to teach you about being awesome."

He gave the class a critical look. Anyone feeling like he wasn't going to be the most supportive of instructors, yet?

"Now let's get this out of the way: it's just a fact that not everyone's cut out to be awesome." There it was. Somewhere in KCMO, Kate was suddenly cringing without a good reason. Jackson just barely shrugged a shoulder. "That's just the way it is. Better accept that right now." He wasn't here to coddle you! "Anyway, let's get another thing out of the way. I want names, and whether you think you're awesome."

He was probably going to judge.

Wonder what kind of class this'll turn out to be.

Name, and whether you're awesome or not.

"I'm Dante," Dante said, stretched out in his seat. "I'm pretty fucking awesome."

Great humility with this one.

Jackson gave that a little shrug like 'we'll see', then raised his eyebrows just a little.

"Why?"

Dante shrugged, and gave a faint nod at himself. "Pretty sure having to explain why you're awesome is a great way to lose points," he said. "So fuck that."

He spoke fluent jackass too.

Jackson looked unimpressed, but then again, he pretty much always did.

"And not explaining can make you look like you're just talking out of your ass without anything to back it up with."

"Am I supposed to care about that?" Dante wondered. "'Cause you're not giving me any reason to give a shit."

"Well, you're in my class and even though this school makes zero damn sense, I could probably flunk you."

But the way he shrugged suggested he didn't really care.

"Now that would make me cry real tears," Dante said.

Obviously not.

"Sure." Drawl. "Welcome to class, Dante."

You and your weird smell. If Jackson had been a curious person, he would've wondered what that was, but... he wasn't.

"That's what she said."

So classy, that Isabela.

Dante gave her a lazy thumbs-up. Because that level of class required appreciation.

This was now the second day in a row that Ada had to put her head down on her desk to laugh thanks to her friends. Gold star, Isabela.

Somehow Isabela managed a casual lean despite sitting down. "Isabela, I don't get any complaints."

"I get plenty of complaints," Jackson retorted with half a shrug. "Has nothing to do with if I'm awesome or not."

He was really showing off his 'smug jackass' take on awesome today. Kate was never going to stop cringing.

"Oh, sweet thing, are they making you teach this because you're insecure?"

Isabela, no.

Honestly, was there any other reason to do things?

He didn't look rattled by that jab, though, to give him some credit. Just kind of bored by it. "I'm just saying," he drawled. "If you're basing your idea of your awesome on what people think of you..."

He felt he didn't have to finish that.

Isabela let out a laugh. "I don't. I just like to be appreciated."

Appreciated long and hard.

"Then you should've said that, instead of going for some weak jab at your teacher," Jackson pointed out, shrugging.

Look, Isabela, you'd been his favorite for the two seconds before that quip. He was just trying to look out for you. Ish. Not really.

"But where's the fun in that?"

Sorry, not sorry, Jackson.

"This is school," Jackson pointed out dryly. (Though sometimes, with him, that was a positive thing. "It's not supposed to be fun."

"Good thing we can find our own then." Like by making fun of the teacher.

Isabela, no.

Stop picking on the werewolf, Isabela.

That deserved something extra dry. Like the Sahara. "Welcome to class."

Roscoe tilted his chair back. "Roscoe. I'm fucking great."

In his tight mesh shirt and tiny booty shorts, did he look like a guy who was going to be humble in a class about being awesome?

Did anyone in this room look like they were going to be humble about that?

He should've expected the question by now. "And why's that?"

Roscoe raised his eyebrows. "Just look at me."

"I'm looking at you," Jackson pointed out. "The fact that I asked may imply I'm not seeing it."

He was personally a little too Abercrombie and Fitch to find the look solid proof of greatness.

"Just wondering, what's your qualification to teach this?" Roscoe asked bluntly. "You seem kinda vanilla for someone who's supposed to know about awesomeness."

Oh, Roscoe, no. Don't do this.

Jackson looked amused, in a kind of condescending way.

And, as many people who'd known him when he'd been a student could attest to, this was his mature reaction.

"Well, you're wrong. And maybe you need to broaden your horizons about what awesome looks like."

"What should awesome look like? In your opinion. Just wondering." He had the foresight to hold up both hands in a gesture of surrender, trying to show that he wasn't fishing for detention here.

Like Jackson was going to give anyone detention. As far as he knew, whoever gave that out was liable to end up running it and please, he might've been desperate for distraction but he wasn't that desperate.

He rolled his eyes. "There's no 'should', kid. That's what I'm saying. But ––" And he gestured at himself. "–– sometimes it helps to look like this."

"Sure," Roscoe granted. "But that doesn't make it awesome. It's still boring."

He gave Jackson an apologetic smile, like 'hey, I don't make the rules.'

"Ada Miller. Can't say I've put much thought into if'n 'm awesome or not," she admitted, "--beyond being th' best there is at what I do."

Oh, good, someone else in this class aside from Dante also smelled weird. That was such basic Fandom crap, wasn't it?

But she'd made up for it by not boasting in a baseless way.

"And what's that?"

"'M a carnie," she said with a bright smile. "I can fix a ferris wheel, always win at cards, an' talk a Townie outta their wallet an' common sense in under two minutes."

"Hmh." That wasn't even a condescening 'hmh'. Just not what he'd expected, and now a part of his brain was very lazily wondering whether the scent had anything to do with all of that. "Well that all seems very... useful."

Please do, he's secretly starved for human interaction.

I've missed this asshole.
